how to hook up wireless access point and cable modem

hi!

i have been using cable modem for a while with one laptop via ethernet.  however, i am having trouble setting up the linksys 802.11a/b access point (not a router ap combo) with the cable modem.

i changed the tcp/ip setting in my laptop and could connect to the access point wirelessly, but i could not get onto internet.  i am lost with this.  could someone help?  i am sure that i am not the only one having this issue.

thanks!

wasn't sure u could connect without a router.  what are the settings for the access point?  you may need to set it up as and extender and set the laptop to 192.168.1.251 i believe is the default ip of linksys access point.

" i set my tcp/ip to a static ip address: 192.168.1.20 with subnet mask being 255.255.255.0."

I know with some WAP's, there is a starting point for the IP, default is 100, so your starting point might need to be 192.168.1.100 and go up from there.
