Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

Ok I have read every post on here about what to do in this case and think I have tried everything. I have a Actiontec dsl modem (verizon) and a wrt110 v2 router. I can view the camera locally but not over the net. I have had this hooked up at another location but with broadband cable service with no problems.

I think the problem my lie with the ip addresses.

Camera 192.168.0.115

Router 192.168.0.1

modem 192.168.1.1

Also when talking with my isp they said to set my modem with dns? protocall and not ppoe? I have noticed in threads that maybe my camera should have the ppoe enabled?

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

I think you mean Verizon said your Verizon modem should be set up to use DHCP, instead of PPoE...

Is the Verizon equipment just a modem, or is it a router also? If you don't know, provide the model number. This sounds like a problem with where port forwarding is being performed. If it is being done at the Verizon equipment, but your camera is connecting to the Linksys router, you are going to have to make some modifications.....

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

Yes you are correct. I thought it was just a modem but linksys tech support said it was also a router? It is a gt701c. I was thinking this because it only has one ethernet port on it and is not wireless although it does have a USB port also. I do believe I have port 1024 forwarded on the modem and on the router. I am confused by both the modem and the router having inside ip addresses. I was told by one of the tech supports that the reason the modem is like that is so you can just use a switch or hub with it also and not need a router. I really do no need the wireless at this location and I have a linksys EFAH05W V2 hub if that would make things any easier. Thanks

Please provide complete details of how your port forwarding is set up. You will have to provide the details from both the Actiontec and Linksys routers

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

The modem is forwarded to port 1024 TCP and the problem may be the modem does not give a ip to forward to. It has a drop down box that says to pick which computer will be the host computer of the forward? The 1 computer that is hooked to the network will show up sometimes but the camera never shows up. Also the router has 1024 forwarded to the address of the camera 192.168.0.115.

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

You need to port forward 1024 at the modem to the WAN IP of the router, then port forward 1024 at the router to the camera IP.

If you can find out how to put the modem in bridge mode, you could simplify things, but a quick search for your modem model and bridging doesn't turn up much except problems.

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

Ok I will give that a try. The problem I am having is to forward a port on the modem  is not like on the router port forwarding page. It is pretty gemeric and does not have a spot to enter the ip address you want to forward to. Looked to me like it was just opening? that port on the router. Do you think the dropdown box that says what computer would you like to host this forward would have to be set to the camera? If so I can never get the camera to show up in that box? Would be nice if there was a linksys modem available.

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

[ Edited ]

The port forward on the modem MUST be set to port forward to the Linksys router's IP. It should be the only IP the modem can see, so it is the only place you can port forward to from the modem. What exactly is in that dropdown list in the modem's port forwarding config?

The problem is that there are two distinct networks at play here once you are on the inside of your modem. There is one network between the modem and the router. Allthat is on that is the modem's ethernet interface, and the router's Internet (or WAN) port. There is another network on the LAN side of the router that all your PCs, camera, etc are on. All the modem knows is how to get to the network that it is directly connected to. While you could add a staic route on the modem to tell it how to get to that network, the modem still needs to know that i must oprt forward the traffic for your camera to the router.

Re: Problem with accessing camera over net via dsl modem and linksys router

I was hoping the modem was just that but after reading this and further review I found that although the modem only had one ethernet output it could 'see' more than one computer by using a simple hub. So actually the modem would sort of work like a router. At least that is how it seemed to me. Anyhow I hooked up a simple linksys workgroup hub and had and then forwarded the ports to the correct place on the modem and I was up and running!
