I bought a Linksys E4200 at Future Shop. I was really enthusiasm to use a new router and its new features, and replace my WRT54G. How disappointing when I tried to connect on the internet!!!
I reinitialized it 6 times. I upgraded the firmware. I downgraded the firmware. Nothing to do. Unable to get an IP address from cable modem from my ISP.
Very disappointing for a router that is worth $190. I know this is not a router Cisco 3900 series, but still!
Is there a responsible employee and Cisco professional that can tell us what is happening with this new router?

I'm having the same issue. The cable provider's DHCP lease lasts 8-hours and it appears the lease is not renewed properly. I assume Cisco/Linksys is aware of the problem by now and working on a new firmware update. My previous WRT160N is still working great, so I am waiting patiently for the fix, however I am as frustrated as everyone else. I bought one the "best" home routers for a reason, and this issue is the opposite of my expectations.

Last weekend I swapped out my WRT54G2 with the new E4200. I saw the same ISP-IP address problem. Releasing and renewing either through the router, or in Windows Command panel was fruitless. I powered off and rebooted ALL equipment on my LAN, cleared all cache and restarted the ISP equipment in the garage. But I couldn't get the E4200 to recognize the IP address from my cable provider. As soon as I reconnected the old WRT, the original IP address came right up. I bought the E4200 with a WET610N and SE2500 and I'd love to use them all, but without an IP address, I'm dead in the water.

Anyone know if the cable modem DOCSIS rating has any relation to this issue? My cable modem is a Motorola SB5101, which is DOCSIS 2.0 compliant. I'm taking a look at the Motorola SB6120, which is DOCSIS 3.0. I don't know if DOCSIS comliancy includes any non-performance related features, such as API commands. I mainly see comparisons of channels and speeds. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS I subscribe to 18Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, so I don't see a reason for upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. If anyone has direct experience related to this DOCSIS topic, it would be great to hear about it. I'll buy the SB6120 if I will see any benefits.

I updated the firmware to 1.0.02 but it never fixed the problem: I cannot access the FTP USB Hard Drive attached to it from the internet outside the LAN. Tech chat never resolved it and recommended that I have to bring it back to the store and have it replaced? What an easy way out to resolve (or will it solve?) the problem....

I have the same exact problem: my new E4200 cannot get an IP address from ISP. I called tech support and I was told the problem is with my modem, but my modem works fine with my old router! Looking at this thread and number of complaints with this same problem, I think the top of the line Cisco wireless router might have a major flaw. CISCO, are you listening?
