Slowness/Inaccessible

Hey All

Just thought I would try to see if anyone else has had the same issue as me. Basically my NMH-410 has been working fine for the last while, but in the last week the **bleep** thing has grinded to a halt. Whenever I turn it on, i'd say 2/3 times it won't connect to the network properly, and accessing any files on it is taking forever.

Its currently got 2 x 2tb wd drives in it with about 280gb free left...it doesn't feel particularly hot, and i've got other network devices running perfectly fine so its not the network i've tested the cable, recrimped it all fine there so the last thing I can think of is the NMH its-self. For some reason ever since I used my Linksys router (WRT610N) it just seems to be causing issues with the NAS. Has anyone encountered similar issues before? Any idea what could be causing it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :smileyvery-happy:

All the best

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Did you add the drives yourself?  If so, what model number, are they 4k sector disks, are the partitions aligned?  Mine would act funny sometimes, turned out my primary disk (disk 1) was on it's way out the door.

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Hi enigmab17,

Initially, for the NMH, the WRT610N was the recommended Linksys by Cisco router when it was released. Additionally, there should be no issues with that router since I actually had that setup a couple of couple of years ago. Since as per your observation, you may try to upgrade the firmware of the WRT610N and check if there would be a difference.

Hope this would help!

Give us feedback, cheers!

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Well both the Router and the NMH410 are fully up to date firmware wise.

I reset the factory settings on it and that got the drive working again, but the second I tried to copy something to it, it died again.

No idea what's going on with it, as it reported that the raid was healthy.

Backing up a load of files which range in the gb (probably 3-4 each), and its crapping out on them :/

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Mine was doing something similar.  When copying large files over, network traffic would stop, copies would fail.  If I launched the flash interface, it would tell me the device was unavaliable (don't remember exact verbage).  I called tech support when it was under warranty and they blamed it on files with spaces in the name.  I have those exact same files on the NAS now without issue.

I really think it had to do with partition alignment, or possibly one of my drives failing.  It always reported the RAID as healthy.  I swapped disk 1 & 2, and after it being off for some time disk 2 showed up as new (which was originally disk 1).

I replaced that disk and aligned the partitions properly and it's been running like a champ since.

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Well dont know about it being an issue with spaces in file names as therers about 3000 other files on the drive with spaces in the names, some larger than the ones trying to copy over.

So what you just took out the 2 drives, and swapped them around (i.e. put drive 2 in slot 1 and drive 1 in slot 2) and then recreated the partition?

Yes, pretty much, but it will erase EVERYTHING currently on the NAS.  Pulled both out, put disk 2 into slot 1, powered it back on, rebuilt everything and shut it down.  Then put disk 1 into slot 2, powered back on, then rebuilt the RAID 1, let it sync, then copied data to it.  It seemed to perform better when I did that, but while traveling, I powered off the NAS.  When I powered it back on, slot 2 was listed as 'new', basically saying it lost it's complete config on that disk.  I copied everything off the NAS and RMA'd the disk in slot 2.  It took forever to copy stuff off (about a week) because I had to try several times and work through the NAS dropping off the network.

Instead of just popping the new disk back in, I decided to rebuilt all partitions and manually format it.  After I did that, it really performs well.  I copy 30+ GB bluray ISO's over without issue, and use RichCopy to have 10 copies at once from the same computer.  Previously, this would kill the NAS and it would drop off the network, now it handles it without issue.  I used RichCopy to put 1.2TB of pics, music, and movies back on the NAS and it didn't fail on a single file copy.  I get sustained write speeds of about 100mbps, and peaks to around 120mbps.  Read speads have increased, too, to around 140-160mbps.

The full steps of how I formated the disks are in the third post here: http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Media-Hub/Sector-alignment-question-on-4k-disks-WD30EZRS-works-but...

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Well I don't really care about erasing everything, i've got an old dlink nas acting as a backup device for all my media so its all up-to-date should I need to wipe it :smileyvery-happy:

Going to try your method, I seriously can't see it being due to spaces in the names, just doesn't make sense. Going to try rebuild it as described by yourself and see if that has any effect. :smileyhappy:

Thanks for the feedback so far all! :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

I agree with you 100% regarding the names, I think the tech support guys basically had no clue.

Re: Slowness/Inaccessible

Totally agree .. Naming convention should not be an issue. That rebuild process was the best workaround I could figure out as well .. Glad to have my NMH working up until now without major issues.

Keep us updated, cheers!
