NM says my router can't do wireless. But it can!

Hi everyone, my first post here so be gentle...

I'm hoping I can get some help. I installed NM Essentials today and would like to add another PC to my network, but when trying to do so I get the message telling me that my "router's wireless features are not currently enabled or is not capable of wireless". Which is interesting, as I've been using it for a while now. I was online with my Wii just this morning and my daughter's laptop connects ok. So I know it works and having checked the admin it's all set up fine to the best of my knowledge.

My details are:

NM version 5.1.8354.0-Pure0

Platform version 11.1.8450.0

OS: Vista Home Premium

Router: Netgear Wireless-N ADSL2 + Modem DGN2000, connected to this PC via ethernet cable

Internet connection type: DSL

Firewall/Virus protection: Bullguard 8.5

Any assistance greatly appreciated! (If any other info needed please let me know and I'll provide it).

Cheers,

Frank

Re: NM says my router can't do wireless. But it can!

Hi FranksBank, I am aware that NM sometimes does not detect the wireless feature on some routers.  What is the firmware version on your router?
My Cisco Network Magic Configuration:
Router: D-Link WBR-2310 A1 FW:1.04, connected to Comcast High Speed Internet
Desktop, iMac: NM is on the Windows Partition, using Boot camp to access Windows, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit RTM, Broadcom Wireless N Card, McAfee Personal Firewall 2009,
Mac Partition of the iMac is using Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard
Laptop: Windows XP Pro SP3, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, McAfee Personal Firewall 2008

Please note that though I am a beta tester for Network Magic, I am not a employee of Linksys/Cisco and am volunteering my time here to help other NM users.

Hi Frank,

Make sure that Network Magic has Full Access going through your Firewall. Make sure you are Completely trusting your own Network.

But also since you do have the Vista operating system, you need to make some adjustments in the Network and Sharing Center.

Re: NM says my router can't do wireless. But it can!

Hi Augie. Thanks for responding. The firmware version is V1.1.1 (no update from new, a couple of months old now) according to the admin system.

Thanks too to you Creator. I've checked the firewall and all is fine there. What adjustments might need to be made in Network/Sharing Centre? I'm proficient with PCs but when it comes to networking I'm a bit of a newbie I'm afraid.

In the Vista Network and Sharing Center (type network and sharing in the start menu to get to it) Make sure your network type is set to Public, File and Printer Sharing is set to on, Public Folder is on, Network Discovery is on, Media Sharing is on.  You should also make sure your firewall is allowing Windows File and Printer Sharing.

All that looks fine (I did have to make one change) but still no go. What's interesting is that the Map shows the Wii console attached to the router, which of course is a wireless connection. On this basis, and that previous to the NM installation all communication between the router and this PC was fine (as it is now; I just can't add my other PC) I'm bound to think the issue is between the NM software and the router, rather than settings on this PC. I could be wrong of course (fair chance of that!) I'm just trying to throw some logic in.

Thanks again for your help; any further ideas?

LATE ADDITION TO ABOVE:

Ok, this is weird. Just for the hell of it, since writing the above, I have now used the 'Go Wireless' task, and connected to my router! So, on the one hand NM can see the wireless router and connect to it wirelessly (as well as by cable) and on the other hand it says the router doesn't seem capable of wireless operation when I want to add another PC. Yoiks!

I did check your router with the Network Lock compatibility list and your router is not on there right now, so I'm not sure if Linksys fully supports your router right now.  thecreator, have any other possible solutions on this problem?

Hi Frank,

You are referring to the Wireless Protection found on the Status Tab in Network Magic?

How do you logged into the Router's Settings from Internet Explorer? It is using Admin and a password?

Re: NM says my router can't do wireless. But it can!

Hi TC,

Yes, I log in to my router setup via browser with Admin and password.

As for the Wireless Prtoection area of Status tab, I hadn't looked at that until you mentioned it. It says "Settings cannot be automatically set" on the main screen, and the subsequent screen - after it's checked the network - says that Network Security and Network Lock are not available and cannot be configured.

The initial problem I encountered was via the 'Add a Device' function in the Tasks tab; here it inspects the network and offers the choice of adding a computer or other peripheral device. I choose 'computer' and it then tells me I can connect one by cable but not by wireless (the option is greyed out, and the message tells me that "NM has detected that your network router's wireless settings are not currently enabled or your router does not support wireless. You will not be able to connect a device wirelessly to your network." (which is interesting, as I've said, as NM on this same PC does connect to the router wirelessly; it just doesn't want to admit that other computers can do the same thing!).

Thanks to you both for your continued support. I really appreciate your efforts.

Cheers,

Frank

Hi Frank,

Did you give Network Magic, your Router's Login of its User ID and its password? In the words the process to check the status of the Wireless Protection settings, is first to type in Network Magic's Password, and if Network Magic does not have your Router's Information, yet, you must supply it, otherwise, Network Magic can't check the status.

Does your NetGear Router, have a Network Lock, or Network Filter? Yes it does, but NetGear labels it Wireless Card Access List, so Network Magic may not be able to control that.

I think that you will need to manually connect the Wireless Laptops to the Router. See your DSL/Router's manual. Then install Network Magic onto that computer once it is connected.

Make no changes to the Router from a Wireless Computer, only a Wired Computer.
