Please bear with my long description. It was the only way I could fully describe the problem. Thanks.
Network Magic is no longer working on my computer. I was using Network Magic v 5.1.9055.0 in a Windows XP Professional computer. I am also using the free Zone Alarm firewall, the F-Prot antivirus program and Spysweeper. They all load on bootup. The problem: When I booted the computer, I started getting an error message box, "Pure Networks Platform Service encountered a problem and needs to close." When the computer finished booting, the Network Magic icon in my systray was grayed out. When I clicked on the grayed out Network Magic icon, a box appeared that stated, "The platform service is not running." I tried restarting it from that box ("Try restarting the platform service") but it did not restart. Instead I got an error box again stating that "Pure Networks Platform Service encountered a problem and needs to close." It was followed by another smaller error box stating: “Platform Service Error. The Platform could not be restarted. System error: “
There was nothing after the initial quote marks.
I then followed the procedure from your “Knowledge Base” at the page, “The Pure Networks Platform Service Is Not Running.”
1) I ran the Windows Installer Cleanup. The only relevant entry listed there was Cisco Network Magic (Network Magic, Pure Networks Platform and Speed Meter Pro were not listed there.) So, I removed Cisco Network Magic from that screen.
2) I then added my own step. I went to Add/Remove Programs in the control panel of Windows
and Network Magic was listed there. I then clicked the “Remove” button but nothing happened.
3) I then downloaded the “Platform Cleanup Tool, unzipped it and ran Clean.cmd. A black box opened and various steps occurred. When it was finished, I was not asked to reboot my computer.
4) I then downloaded Network Magic from your download site. I right clicked on the NMsetup.exe file and chose “Run as..” A box opened with the choice of running the program as the current user or as the administrator. When I chose run as the current user, nothing happened other than a small blank box appeared with an OK button which I clicked. I then right clicked again on the NMsetup.exe file and chose to run it as the administrator. After about 75% of the “Install Platform Service” completed, a message box appeared stating, “Pure Networks (or some such thing – my phrase) encountered a problem and needs to close. “ Nevertheless the installation continued and completed. When I rebooted I still had the same problem I had before I started all of these steps. The Network Magic icon is grayed out in the systray. Again I tried restarting the Platform Service from the screen that appeared when I clicked on the Network Magic icon in my systray, but it still didn’t work.
1) How do I get Network Magic to work properly again?
2) Once Network Magic is working, do I have to renter my activation code?
Thanks for your time.
Richard

Hi All and Richard,
Uninstall Network Magic and reboot. On reboot, go back to Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Spysweeper. Reboot the computer.
Use your Registry Cleaner or go to http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ and download a 30-Day Trial of Tuneup Utilities 2009 and run its Registry Cleaner.
Reboot the computer.
Reinstall Network Magic. Use the other computer on the Network to reactivate Network Magic.
Run Network Magic for a couple of days, before you reinstall Spysweeper.
Network Magic is in a sense, spying on your computer, with permission. When you reinstall Spysweeper again and the same thing happens, decide if you want Network Magic or Spysweeper.

Hi maxdent01,
What Anti-Virus Software package is installed?
Temporarily uninstall the Anti-virus Package and reboot the computer a few times and see if the Platform Service starts up fine? If it is, then the problem is caused by Anti-Virus not allowing the Platform Service to start up in a timely matter.
Report back.

When you try to open the network magic software on your computer, what error message does it prompt you? Did you recently add another wireless device to your network like a tablet? You can try uninstalling the software. Before uninstalling though, make sure you have a copy of you license key. Try re-installing the software then.

I've been running Network Magic for several years without problems, but after I started using the tablet I just purchased, I started getting the 'platform service not running' error. When the tablet is off, NM runs great. When I turn it on, I start getting the error. If I continue to try restarting the service, it eventually comes on, but doesn't stay on for more than a couple of minutes. I run Norton 360 as my anti-virus software. Norton & Network Magic seem to get along fine. Both my laptop & desktop respond the same way and the error happens at thesame time on both computers.
Any thoughts?
