Under the Administration tab, when I try to reformat the disk, it says "disk not available." I have gone through the setup process again but it makes no difference. There is no light on for "disk 1" on the front of the NSLU2, even after rebooting, and even if I connect the disk as disk 2. There is a light on the disk itself and it vibrates as if it is spinning, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware failure. When I try to see the disk from Network Places on the PC, it says "network path not found."
I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Try to connect your hard drive straight to your computer first though just to properly isolate.

I have already tried connnecting my hard disk direct to the computer, but it doesn't recognise it due to the non-Windows formatting of the disk.
I would be very grateful for any other suggestions.

Before I suggest you for any troubleshooting steps, I would like to ask few questions. Was there any light on the Disk before? In which format the disk has been formatted? Try to connect a different disk with the NSLU2 and then check the status.

Possible it's the problem with the device. Have you tried resetting the device?

You suggest resetting the device, presumably meaning the hard disk attached to the NSLU2. I am not sure how to reset a hard disk, can you explain please. It's a Maxtor 500gb model, about three years old.

The light on the hard disk is the normal 'on' light, which always comes on when it is plugged in. There is no light where there should be on the NSLU2 itself, to show that a hard disk is connnected.
I do not know the name of the formatting used by the NSLU2 - it is the default format used by that device. When I first connected this hard disk to it, I had to allow it to be reformatted by the NSLU2, or I would have got no further in the set up process.
I do not have a spare disk. If I did have one, I would be reluctant to try that step, because it would involve reformatting the disk (as above) and losing the data on it.

No, not the hard disk but to reset the NSLU2. You can see the reset button on the back panel of NSLU2. Press the reset button for 10 seconds and make sure the hard disk is not attach to your NSLU2. You will know the reset process is complete when the network storage link beeps once.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I have now reset the NSLU2, but it is still the same - it still says "No disk installed" under the administration tab. If you can think of anything else to try, I would be very grateful.

Hello lawfam. You might want to consider saber_tooth's questions as well:

You can check the links below as well I found from Cisco's public kb site.
I am thinking as well that it can be the device not working and an upgrade for firmware might be helpful but I already checked their website but no firmware available for this device anymore.
