I've experimented with location, with device names, with different channels, with different network options.
I used this advice for best results (copied from another entry on this forum):
I followed the installation instructions which were easy and the RE1000 was working fine right away. But the first week, I had to reboot the RE1000 a few times because my devices were losing internet connections. After each reboot, it would work for a couple of days before it stopped working again. I thought I would try assigning a static IP to the RE1000, since I have another extender (from another company) which had similar problems until I gave it a static IP address. I also had an HP printer that was losing its wireless connection settings after every few days until I switched it to static IP also. So from my E4200, I did a DHCP reservation for the mac address of the RE1000, and I rebooted the RE1000 so that it will come up on the static IP address that I assigned to it. Then I went to the admin page of the RE1000 (brought up the RE1000's IP address in a browser; by default the username is blank and the password is "admin"), and I changed "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" to "Static IP", and rebooted the RE1000 again.
This configuration was the most stable, but still didn't work as it should (disconnect/reconnect every couple of minutes for 10-15 minute stretches).
I'm frustrated and done.

Have you tried upgrading the firmware of your RE?

This device has this most current firmware.
It does NOT WORK as advertised. Even with a Cisco/Linksys EA 2700 in the same room.
Look, it's a $45 item. I can only spend so much time messing with it before I simply go buy another one.
RE1000 is NOT READY for reliable service.

if the firmware is up-to-date on both devices, the EA2700 and the RE1000, then this issue should just have something to do with your wireless settings.
configure the 2.4GHz network by setting channel width to 20MHz only and specifying a channel (1, 3, 6 or 9). use WPA2/WPA Mixed mode for security.

Those are my current settings (channel 1 was the best in my environment).

to ensure that the range extender does not lose connectivity it should pick up the main network from where it's located with a GOOD signal (3 bars) at the very least. you may need to relocate your device. ideally it should be about halfway between the main router and area where your wireless devices are having difficulty connecting at. note that it should also need to be elevated and not to be placed on the floor.

Router/Expander 101. Rest assured that these guidlines were followed.
Update: After removing the RE1000 from service, it became VERY obvious that my Linksys EA2700 was the culprit here, not the RE1000. The EA2700 had regular fits of very, very low signal output followed by, of course, a lot of connecting and reconnecting by my client devices and the RE1000. You simply don't expect that from a brand-new router, but it happens.
I now have a new router and it appears to perform pretty well without the range extender.

It shouldn't. Mine doesn't lose the settings when I unplug it. Only if I hold the reset button down.

Does the Extender RE1000 require an un interuptable power supply and/or a surge suppressor to avoid loosing its'

thanks
It's better to have a surge protector to avoid restoring settings to factory defaults during sudden power interruptions. It is common for electronic devices such as this to restore settings if power is interrupted suddenly. To avoid it, use a surge protector.
