An Alternative to Sololink

[ Edited ]
Sololink has not worked for over a month.I removed all my devices from sololink.

I am now using DynDNS to view my WVC200 on the internet and it's working fine. The best part is, it's free! So sololink is totally unnecessary but it took me 8 months to find that out!

About DynDNS. When I opened my browser to my WVC200 camera in the DDNS menu under Setup, I noticed there are 3 options: sololink, DynDNS and TZO. I figured there had to be a way to get the alternatives working so I played around with DynDNS until I got it to work. I'm going from memory here and a lot of trial and error so I may miss a step or two.

1. Go to http://www.dyndns.com/account/create.html and create a basic account - it's the free account. For simplicity, use the same username and password you're using on your Sololink account - one less thing to remember.
2. Once the account is created, login and go to My Services.
3. Then Add a Host Service. You'll fill out a menu like this:

Hostname: philhost.dyndns.org - Use the same hostname as you currently use on your web cam.
IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - The browser automatically finds it. There's nothing you have to add.
Wildcard: Y - Wasn't sure by I thought this was OK.
Mail Exchanger: none - Didn't apply.
Backup MX: N - Didn't apply.

4. Save your settings and it creates the host philhost.dyndns.org or whatever you called it.
5. The next thing I did was to download the DynDNS Updater from CNet at http://www.download.com/DynDNS-Updater/3000-2381-10405775.html?part=dl-DynDNSUpd&subj=dl&tag=button. It reports back to DynDNS with my cable modem's current IP address every ten minutes or so.
6. Install it and, under Settings, create a hostname using the information in step 3: the dyndns.com username and password and the hostname (philhost.dyndns.org in my example). Once this is running, you can choose to run it as a service instead of starting when you logon to Windows. This way, dyndns updater is always reporting your current IP address. I just found it more convenient.

7. Now that you have a DynDNS account created and the host set up, open your webcam's Setup screen through your browser. I'm assuming you have a WVC200 webcam but if not, the instructions should still work.
Go to Setup and click on DDNS. Under DDNS, change the service provider from Sololink to DynDNS. Fill in your Host Name, Account and Password from step 3 above.
8. Click on Apply and you should be set.
9. Open your browser and type in the address http://philhost.dyndns.org:1024/ (my example). Keep in mind the port number (1024) may be different for you. Linksys uses port 1024 on my WVC200 but you can use other ports. Double check it under Setup, Options, under Other.

As I said, this is from memory. Try this out and let me know if it works or you run into a glitch or have questions.
I had these same instructions under the thread Cancelled my Sololink but I want to make sure everyone sees this.

Good Luck,

Phil

Re: An Alternative to Sololink

Tried the DynDNS. Got my two WVC54GC cams to work but still get "Server not found" for the WVC200. Any thoughts or suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

Re: An Alternative to Sololink

I also get a "Failed to connect to DDNS server" for my new WVC200, even though the Updater client on my computer connects ok.

I would appreciate any further suggestions.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Do you mean that you read my instructions and can't connect to DynDNS.com? Or are you talking about sololink?
If you are talking about DynDNS then I don't have any suggestions. Reread it and try again. Make sure you didn't miss a step. It's exactly the process I used to connect to it back in October and its worked perfectly since then.

Re: An Alternative to Sololink

I read and followed your instructions and am also using DynDSN but the camera won't connect. DynDSN support confirmed that the camera is not connecting to their service. I installed the client updater onto a computer on the same LAN and it connects without any problem. I'll take it up with Linksys support.

Re: An Alternative to Sololink

I have a problem that neither Linksys, nor my ISP can answer; hopefully someone here can. I live in Japan so I have a weird ISP since I am in the military. It's a regular DSL account but I seem to have two different IP Addresses. When I go to my router firmware and click "Status", "Router", my internet IP Address is one thing..and when I go to www.whatismyipaddress.com, it lists another. My ISP says that is because it shares IP Addresses for more than one person at each base..or whatever. There is no way for me to have a static internet IP Address, but it isn't exactly dynamic. I can go my my local ip address of my wireless-g camera and view the video..but nobody can remotely using either sololink or DynDNS. I created a dynamic ip address account at DynDNS under "domain.podzone.net" but I can't enter that domain into my linksys wireless-g setup because it says the site certificate was rejected, don't know how to change that. So basically whenever someone like my mother tries to go to my "domain.podzone.net", or "domain.ourlinksys.com", the connection times out. Anyone know any fixes?

Re: An Alternative to Sololink

I have created a DynDNS account as you recomended, but I can not get my wvc54gc to change to this new DNS service. There is no option for DynDNS. It only has SoloLink.
Any help would be appreciated..
Thanks
