Attempting to connect to Cox Cable. Setup using 'Obtain an IP Automatically' per Cox instructions. I can read the Internet IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS addresses from the router status page yet cannot connect to the internet. Can Release and Renew repeatedly and get good response of addressing data on the status page. When I configure using the Static IP setup, copying all the values read from the status page when I configured for Obtain an IP Automatically, everything works. Why isn't 'Obtain an IP Automatically' working?

i think you need to select on "Clone the PC’s MAC address" on the router as well as selecting 'Obtain an IP Automatically'.
after that, save and restart the computer and you should be good to go.

Yeah, I painfully learned about the clone thing when I first installed the router. That was the first thing I tried this time but it didn't work for me. Tried it with cloning and without; same result of nada. Connecting the computer directly to the SB5101 cable modem eliminates all problems. The router obviously can automatically obtain the IP Addressing info since I see it on the status page. Quite the mystery to me that when the addressing info is obtained automatically the network can't see the internet but when the exact same info is setup as static IP it works.

When you connect the computer directly to the modem, you can access the Internet.
Connect the modem and the main computer to the router.
Open the setup page of the router. Set the Internet connection type to ' obtain IP automatically'. Clone the MAC address of the main computer. Unplug the power to the router and the modem. First plug in the power to the modem only. Wait for 1 minute and then plug in the power to the router. Wait for a minute and now try to access the internet. See if that works.
If not then download the latest firmware from Linksys website. Open the setup page of the router. Go to Administration tab and click on Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the Firmware file and upgrade it on the router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it.
