Is it Possible to Have Wired Intranet & Wireless Internet???

I'm hoping that someone here can help me.  I have a retail store that moves weekly from location to location in the same way that craft fairs and county fair retailers change location.  The host location provides free internet access for credit card approvals and all other needs, and I have no problem accessing that wireless feature.

We have five laptop with point of sale software. One has the software with the customer database, stock list and inventory levels.  The others connect to that program and database via a Zdrive intranet connection.

Here's the problem.  We have been using the wireless capabilities of the laptops to communicate with each other to access the point of sale software, but it is slow and unreliable.  The laptops are all on a single counter, and are close enough to one another to be connected to a router via ethernet cables.

So......  can I set this up to continue tapping into the provided wireless internet, but also have a wired intranet?  Will it work?

If so, what kind of router do I need and is this a simple or easy task?  (While I'm not necessarily skilled enough to set this up myself, I do have someone who can help me with it.)

I thank you in advance for your help.

Yes. That will work. Your laptops can connect wirelessly to the Internet and at the same time you can have wired connections.

I don't need a router to connect them. A simple Ethernet switch would be sufficient. You can set static IPs on the wired connections. You don't set a default gateway on the wired connections. This way the laptops will still use the wireless connection for internet.

Re: Is it Possible to Have Wired Intranet & Wireless Internet???

Glad I'm not the only only one, but hate you had a problem!

When I set mine up, I initially wanted to just plug the other stuff into the computer. I had the router, though, and didn't want and I didn't have (nor want) internet at the house.  All I needed was a tidy, closed home network on a swift little LAN with limited or no intertnet access.

We all have our difficulties with routers abnd such, but I set my hard connection up first; seemed like it would default to whichever network you set up as a first HomeGroup entry, but I'm just guessing.

I have 2 wifi networks going and a single LAN, and could run a VLAN if I could get the blooming router to talk to everything, lol! Ive had to downgrade that goofy IE11, but thats primarily because 11 wont run any addons or extensions so its almost impossible to push enough bandwidth to transmit streaming video!!  Aside from that, the notable minor issue was that I created a bunch of extraneous wifi networks as I stumbled along learning, and the only major issue was that I couldnt' find the drivers, nor updated firmware for the hardware I plugged into the network. The roiuter company didn't have them, nor MS, so I end up with either generic drivers or I do without.  /shrug  I'm off to check the Australian and British websites to see if they have something in the way of drivers and firmware files, I guess.

Remember this - it may be the most  important thing you learn today - when you're setting up any sort of home network, make sure you write down your user names and passwords for each different network signon (and guests, too), or you will wish you had!  I have had to wipe my network adapter a couple dozen times in the last week for just that reason!!

Have fun!

CC~
