Issue with QuickVPN and RV042

Hello all,

I am trying to connect to my RV042 router using QuickVPN on the RC of Windows 7, when connecting it gets all the way to activating policy and than gives me a pop up 'The remote gateway is not responding, do you wish to wait' I have no problems when connecting using XP. I am using version 1.3.0.3 of the quickvpn and my router is on firmware 1.3.12.6-tm

The following is what the log says on my local machine for QuickVPN

Has anybody had any luck with connecting using either Vista or Win7?

Thanks

Re: Issue with QuickVPN and RV042

I am wondering if your windows Vista computer is behind a router or NAT. The design change in Vista is that it disables IPSEC tunnel mode if the client is behind a NAT or has a private IP address. This is to prevent a source port conflict with multiple IPSec clients behind a NAT. You can further look the explanation in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 944335 which outlines why IPSEC mode is disabled in Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944335 As a work around, you may use instead PPTP VPN or they may use other third party IPSEC client such as Greenbow or SafeNet and configure the router for Client to Gateway.

Re: Issue with QuickVPN and RV042

Thank you for the reply. I am not very familar with VPN setups. How would I set it up using PPTP?

Also I downloaded Greenbow and set up a connection following this guide:

http://www.thegreenbow.com/doc/tgbvpn_cg_RV042_en.pdf

The VPN summary page in my RV042 shows that I am connected, however I am unable to connect to anything inside of that network. Any ideas on that?

Thanks again

Re: Issue with QuickVPN and RV042

I have a similar issue but maybe some more information.

I have three customers with RV042's installed.  Two behind Netopia Modems with AT&T fixed IP address, and 1 on Verizon DSL with dynamic IP address (doesn't change very often but have to call if can't get on to network).

I have several computers that access the VPN running different operation systems (Notebook W2K, desktop XP, desktop Vista and notebook W7).  Each VPN is setup with a different subnet 192.168.2.x, 192.168.3.x and 192.168.4.x so that I can access them from my office (Home office 192.168.1.x) or from each other as it is important that the subnets are not the same.  All interfaces work except the Windows 7.  I  too have 1.3.0.3 installed on the computer with Windows 7 because I couldn't make previous versions work.  With Windows 7 and QuickVPN I can make the connection as shown in the previous post but get the same Failed to pin the LAN IP of the remote VPN Router.

Because the Netopia with AT&T have 5 fixed web IP addresses and has a wireless connection I connected my wireless connection to one of the 4 extra IP addresses.  When I ran QuickVPN I again got the same message.  I then connected the wired network interface to the local network.  This connection was assigned the address 192.168.2.26 by the DHCP server.  When I ran QuickVPN again I got a connection and the standard connection box.  Based on network traffic it looks like the VPN is connected via the web but the ping was done on the local network satisfying QuickVPN software.

As I am not a network person this makes me think that something in Windows 7 is blocking the ping response when going across the Web.  I have looked to try to determine the difference between the firewall configuration of Vista and Windows 7 and have not been able to discover what the problem is.  I assume that a default in Windows 7 is different than in Vista or something set during the install of QuickVPN is different in Windows 7 than in Vista that Cisco may of may not address in the future as the RV042 seems to obsoleted by Cisco.

I hope this adds some information to you network people that you can just say "Oh, set the public option on something or turn this on or something else simple".

I am testing Windows 7 so I don't have to have so many different OS.  My industrial software appears to work perfectly with the XP mode in Windows 7 including the USB to RS-232 adapter to connect to older devices, as the USB port was not availlable in previous versions of virtual PC.  Plus Windows 7 makes these programs available from the start menu in Windows 7 so you don't even have to fireup Virtual PC to run them (must run in background but makes it easer for ME!!
