RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

Hi, I've got 3 linksys products I'm trying to use simultaneously.

I've got a WRT54GL(Wireless router) connected via wan to the wan1 on an RV042(VPN router) which is then connected to an AG241(ADSL Router).

I'm trying to use the RV042 to create a VPN connection between the wireless network and the LAN/ADSL router network.

I've got no problems setting it all up except for the problem of the PPTP server and QuickVPN server on the RV042 automatically assigns DNS for the VPN connection to be itself. I'm unsure how to modify this to make it so once the Wireless clients connect to the lan they can then access the internet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

i believe what u need to do is , instead of WRT54GL as your main router...make RV042 the main router...and change the lan ip of the WRT54GL in the range of RVO42..say e.g, RVO42 has an ip add of 192.168.1.1 , then the ip address of WRT54GL should be 192.168.1.2 and the DHCP server in it disabled...do the same for AG241 , except its ip add would be 192.168.1.3

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

Thankyou for your reply, but this doesn't provide me with the solution I want. If I wanted one big network, that would be easy as pie.

I'm purposely making the wireless users VPN into the network through the VPN router, to increase security from wireless encryption breaking.

If someone requires more information, please ask, I'll have no problems providing it if it gets me a solution.

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

Wouldn't setting the RV042 up as the primary and setting the other two devices up on different VLANs seperate your network?  That would be a good solution if you are trying to keep your security issue for the wireless seperate from the other LAN segments.

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

as far as I knew the RV042 didn't have VLAN support did it?

otherwise yeah, VLAN would make it easy as.

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

well..if u connect the WRT54G to the RV042 , it doesn't mean that the wireless clients are going online through the RV042...the wireless client gets connected to the wireless router and then the request is forwarded through the WRT54G..
if u want the internet request to be sent through the router , i guess the kinda setup i mentioned is correct...

Not really sure if the RV042 has vlan support but the RV082 does.  I run a RV082 basically in the same configuration  and it works perfectly.

With the other configuration with the wireless then the RV that would work but you would have to do a VPN if you wanted to connect to any of the wireless workstations.  However wouldn't it cause a problem connecting a VPN from "inside" a LAN.  It would be coming and going to the same IP address right?  I have been trying to configure QuickVPN on my laptop and can not connect via VPN while connected to my network.  If I connect to my neighbors wireless then I can connect.  What about creating subnets would that still basically do the same function?

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

Ok here's the setup I've got. The thing you've gotta do is have the Wireless clients on a different IP range to the LAN clients.

WRT54G DHCP ENABLED 10.0.0.0/24 .10-.20
LAN IP: 10.0.0.1/24
WAN IP: 192.168.0.2/24 GATEWAY: 192.168.0.2/24

WRT54G WAN Connected to RV042 WAN1

RV042 DHCP DISABLED
LAN IP: 172.16.0.2/24 GATEWAY 172.16.0.1/24
WAN1 IP: 192.168.0.1/24 NO GATEWAY SET
PPTP ASSIGNS 172.16.0.0/24 .21-.25

AG241 DHCP ENABLED 172.16.0.0/24 .10-.20
DHCP DNS POINTS TO THIS!
LAN IP: 172.16.0.1/24 GATEWAY: INTERNET
WAN IP: DHCP FROM INTERNET

Everything works, except that the PPTP server, and even if using QuickVPN software, the RV042 assigns the DNS to be itself, instead of allowing me to configure it to be the AG241 so that the VPN clients can obtain DNS requests from the internet.

Hope this helps

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

Hi… I think what is missing is the Gateway settings on WRT54GL. You have setup the WRT54GL as WAN Gateway for itself. I think you should have setup RV042 as a Gateway, so that any request that reaches this interface is forwarded to RV router which further goes to ADSL gateway and internet. Also Configure the WAN interface of WRT54GL and WAN1 interface of RV router with DNS servers in the IP settings. This will make sure you have public DNS servers assigned to clients behind the WRT54GL. Let me know if resolves your Issue.

Re: RV042 VPN DNS configuration problems

I agree with Ricewind, however if you are set on having the WRT54GL as the gateway and if the RV042 allows you (the RV082 does) set the DHCP of the RV042 to relay.  I am not up to speed on the RV042 but they are the same series so maybe they are simular in that reguards.
