Re: RVS4000 - VPN Setups - QuickVPN Guide

Update:

Tried re-creating and re-importing both client and admin certs.

No change.

Suggestion:  The client log says it cannot ping the router - but it does not tell me *WHAT* it's trying to ping!  If I knew the IP address it THOUGHT it was supposed to ping - that might be a great help in diagnosing the problem.  (as in the fact that it gave me the IP address of the host it wanted to hit - and I saw it was wrong...)

Can suggest for a future update?  (hopefully an update that WORKS?!!)

2nd suggestion:

It is possible to have Linksys publish the process - in some detail - that takes place between the QVPN software client and the RVS4000 router when trying to establish a VPN connection?  (using sample IP addresses, etc.)

This way we can understand what each step is supposed to be doing - and can configure or adapt accordingly...

Thanks!

Re: RouterWorld - VPN Setups - QuickVPN Guide

Sir, You are absolutely correct - it is indeed gone. So far gone that it's not even present *HERE*. Would you please: (a) Restore the lost data - as it might well be useful for folks like me. (b) Edit this post to indicate that this information is indeed "...lost and gone forever, oh my darling Clementine!" IMHO this would avoid a lot of confusion and would provide a better customer experience. Thanks! Jim

Re: RVS4000 - VPN Setups - QuickVPN Guide

Well, the tunnel gets established but then nothing is going through. Without a packet sniffer checking what kind of packets you get after the IPSec SA is established it is not easy to tell the reason.

One possible reason could be that this other router does network address translation (NAT) on the IPSec packets. On Linksys routers you have a passthrough option for various VPN types. In some cases it helps to turn off these passthrough options to force the router to do an UDP encapsulation of the IPSec packets through port 4500.

Now that other router is not yours. You could try to test the connection while the computer has a public IP address. If you don't want to go out to the next hotspot you could also try to set up static IP addresses on the computer and the WAN/internet interface of the RVS and connect them directly with a cable. That way you can test the connection ruling out influences of the other router.

Re: RVS4000 - VPN Setups - QuickVPN Guide

Thanks!

These are good ideas, and I will try them.

Questions:

1.  What / where is a good "packet sniffer" I can get?

2.  Is setting up a VPN portal supposed to be this hard?  I can't believe that everyone that sets up a corporate network has to go through what we go through just to get two computers to talk!  Businesses are (AFAIK), extremely allergic to time-wasting sink-holes like this - they want stuff up and working yesterday - not spending a week or so trying to deduce what the manufacturer should have told you.

What say ye?

You can download and install WireShark. Do a internet search and you will quickly find it.

Re 1. I use the packet sniffer "wireshark" on Windows.

Re 2. And still many businesses try to set up everything on their own, although they want to use it for business purposes and it may become even mission-critical. Get a professional company set it up for you with professional devices like Cisco. Gets you up and going quickly and very reliably. Networking is still a very technical and complex topic. Of course the last sentence isn't advertised...

Re: RouterWorld - VPN Setups - QuickVPN Guide

After several hours with Linksys tech Support, they gave up and told me they
don't know what the problem is and they don't really help configuring the
Microsoft VPN client. My configuration is this. I just installed a Linksys
BEFVP41 router on my local network with public IP of 64.52.3.3 (not real) and
internal IP of 192.168.1.5. At home I have tried connecting both thru a
Linksys WRT54GS and directly (PPPOE) to my DSL modem - neither works. I have
been thru setting up a security policy and assigning it but no luck. I get
error 800 when I try to connect. All firewalls are off. Is there a
step-by-step guide to do this ? This is the first VPN I have tried to setup
and am not having any fun yet.

Re: RouterWorld - VPN Setups - QuickVPN Guide

I've just purchased a RVS4000 with the latest firmware v1.3.0.5 and tried to use the Quick VPN v1.3.0.3.  It does not work in Windows 7 at all.  **bleep**?  Anyone get this product to work?
