Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

Firstly apologies, this must be a common question, i have searched all over the net and looked through the postings on this forum but cant find any suggestions.

I have the BEFSR41 V2 (getting old i know) running on 10 Meg telewest connection.  Transfer speeds can be over 1 meg per sec if i connect straight to my PC, but going through the router im lucky to get 300 meg.

This test has been repeated time and time again with the same results.  Fast without router, slow with.  Ive powered off (overnight...infact everynight) ive reset the factory defaults, its had a fresh install of windows (for another reason, not because i thought it would help), ive tried a differnt port on the back of the router and i just will not get any better than 300k per sec.

Any genuises out there got any bright ideas as networking never was my strong point?:smileysurprised:

Many thanks in advance

Re: Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

Ok well gonna have a stab at answering my own question, perhaps you guys can tell me if im on the right lines... The WAN connection of the BEFSR41 seems to be 10 meg full duplex....does that mean 5 meg each way?

Which converted to Kilobytes and compensating for packet handling and overhead would be.....ahhh crap... Is that whats going on?  Ive hit the limits of the router?

I use zonealarm, no effect closing this down, ive payed withteh MTU using the various tweak tools.... nothing else out of the orindary to declare..

Oh and firmware is  1.43, Sep 04 2002... i know this is a lil out of date... might give that a try a bit later on (and especailly if you guys think it will help)

Any thoughts appreciated

PS if the router is maxed out, any suggestions on a replacement model?

Re: Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

Well thanks for the reply,  I hadnt upgraded the firmware becuase id read about instability issues.  I have just downlaoded the latest firmware... upgraded, reset, powered off everything, reset again and guess what..... no change..... rock steady 350k per sec off numerous sites....

Power off, direct cable connection to my PC and boom 800k per sec from those same sites (off the blueyonder server downloading battlefield demo i can get 1100 k per sec.... 800k is obviosuly the internet slowdown at this time of the day!!)

Any other bright ideas?  Im thinking ive maxed out the ability of the router, can anyone confirm?

Anyone getting more that 350k per sec of there linksys befsr41 OVER WAN???  I know LAN speed is 10/1000 but i think WAN speed is only 10 meg duplex... thats 5 megabit max - packet loss and handshaking and net slow down..

Any other ideas?

Thanks again for trying to help

Re: Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

bright ideas eh, if you dont want my help just say so.

For Cablemodems you should be using MTU setting of 1500. (not auto or anything else)

please make sure MTU is set at 1500 and you reboot the router and modem. (reboot as opposed to reset)

Re: Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

Hmmm sorry if that sounded flippant or ungratefull, i really appreaciate your assistance, and any ideas are good ideas.  As per my previous posts i bleive i know the answer, i would really like to know if ive maxed out my router, before playing around with things too much

I have tried several MTU (and RWIN) settings including 1500 (which it was at default) Auto and also a few others that i basically just hacked and slashed at using various tools which made no differance... Im now back at windows default, and MTU 1500.  Problem still persists though.  I dont think that is the issue anyway, as when i remove the router from the equation it works fine!

Do you know if i have hit the maximum limit of the router?  Ive kinda convinced myslef that is what is happening.  I know it will work upto 100 mbit on LAN... but if the WAN port is full duplex and 10mbit that would explain it right?

If the answer is no, then i would be interested to know WHY the answer is no.  Willing to give anything a try but i fear it may all be in vain!

Many thanks for your help so far.

Re: Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

And that could be the source of the problem?  The router will not run any faster?

I dont understand why noone else is having this problem, thats why im asking the question.  The befsr41 is probally the best selling router

Many thanks for your assitance

Ps.. Nice website btw

You should in theory get only get 5Mbps. thats 600KB/s downloads when you should be getting 1200KB/s.

there is no real way aound this. Cable technology is out perfoming what used to be good routers. they are now just outdated.

time for a new router I guess.

As for the site. we aim to please....

Re: Slow speed through BEFSR41 V2

well i have run into the same problem & have the newest firmware.i have cox cable & they upgraded the service to 900 kb down load & i tested it to check.i wanted to upgrade to the top service to get the better upload & it was 150 kb but  the download was lower @ 750 kb.i was lost to see it slower since i tested before the upgrade was at 900 kb. when i connect to the modem i get 1.5 mb down, but back to the choke out connention  with rounter installed.so i know it will do 900 kb  but slower with better service. if you say that to get a better router than the befsr41, than what one do you think i should get. i really think a config problem than just an old router.
