WPC54G Problems

I've been using this wireless adapter for about 2 years and never had a problem. I've never had a problem with my signal and could even see 4 of my neighbours access protected wireless signals.
My system crashed recently and I've had to reinstall everything. The adapter has given me a major problem though.
I made a mistake by inserting the adapter before installing the drivers. That's probably where all my problems started. I was eventually able to install it. At that point, I had to check "use windows to configure my wireless network connection" everytime my system hibernated or I had to boot up; as in it kept unchecking itself.
To resolve it, I uninstalled the adapter and tried to reinstall unsuccessfully.
What happens is that it installs a section of the drivers and when the set up window comes up where you click "click here to start", the system freezes. I have had to "force boot" and sometimes work in safe mode to restore the system when this happens. I have the installation CD and I've even downloaded drivers from the Linksys website to no avail. I even bought version 3 of the same adapter (I have had version 1 for the 2 years) and I've run into the same problem.
I have Windows XP with 512 RAM and a 2.8 gig Intel processor and a 40 gig hard drive so I'm assuming the problem is not resource based. I'm absolutely not "tech savvy" but can solve basic problems.
Please heeeeeeeelllllllppppp....in a laymans language.

Re: WPC54G Problems

On that laptop you have install a WLAN monitor for which you have a Icon in the system tray. Right click on it and select use windows XP wireless configuration utility. Once that is done you may not have to select “"use windows to configure my wireless network connection"” again after reboot. Alternate what you could try is go to add remove programs and uninstall the Linksys program and then remove the card and insert again. Let the setup CD be in. Do not run the setup program, you laptop will show you new hardware found and will install the drivers without the setup program. Finish installing the drivers and now windows will always manage your wireless network. If you fail to install the driver in this way download the latest drivers for this card from Linksys download site and update the drivers from device manager (start >> Run || “devmgmt.msc”)

Re: WPC54G Problems

Well, it doesn't matter which way I'm installing from, the result is the same.
I've tried installing drivers from the installation CD, from the Linksys website, and from linksys.com/connect.....netcheck. It freezes every time.
At the point of the freeze it shows the drivers are moving from the WPC54Gv3 source into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
Right clicking shows I can
1. Disable windows XP wireless configuration....this doesn't change to enable when chosen
2. Open the monitor to create a profile which shows searching for an SSID and a "SecureEasySetup" push button that doen't open set-up and
3. Turn off monitor. whch makes the grey icon on the tray disappear.
At device manager, yellow exclamation mark visible meaning drivers not installed.....which means uninstalling, and then reinstalling and then all over again. Very frustrating.

Re: WPC54G Problems

One more piece of info incase someone figures this one out. The device status says "Windows cannot load the device manager for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Troubleshoot doesn't help.

Re: WPC54G Problems

Well, folks, I got it installed. I moved the adapter to the lower slot - (Ricoh) cardbus controller and it worked. I have no idea why. The only catch is that I have to set windows to configure my wireless network connection by right clicking the green icon on the tray. For some reason that setting will not hold. I can live with that but if there's a soln, let me know. Thanx.
