Any steps for Setting up NetTalk on M20

[ Edited ]

I notice there is a method to set up xbox for use on cisco valet router m20 by accessing the router page and tweaking some of the settings.

Is there a similar method to dedicate one of the router ports for use by NetTalk?

I have inconsistent performance and think the router may need tweaking.

I think NetTalk can be set to 4.2.2.2 (or something to this effect)

If anyone is interested in what I am experiencing - when NetTalk is plugged into the router, the led light for the port is blue while the other leds stay green.  Which I think is correct and a good thing.

However, sometimes the NetTalk goes off line and i have to disconnect it from the router to re-establish connectivity.

And sometimes all the ledsl turn blue and requires that i unplug the NetTalk gadget from the router and reset everything.

Update to above post:

The following response was provided to me by NetTalk Support.  Can anyone help me execute the steps below?

" Hello,

We believe a port change in your unit may alleviate your current issue. Please, if possible, place your DUO on the DMZ option of your router by logging into the router interface and placing the DUO's IP into the DMZ.

Alternatively you can port forward Port 80 TCP to the IP of the DUO. This will allow us to gain access to the DUO via the public IP from our end and allow us to make the necessary port change. Let us know when this is done.

Once this is done please visit http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and check to see if port 80 is visible. If it is visible then generally we should be able to access your unit."

I think what the Net Talk tech support would like ti di here is to assign a static ip addrss on the NetTalk device then either opne the ports(port forwarding or port trigerring) to the router. Hope that this will work fir you.

Re: Any steps for Setting up NetTalk on M20

The DMZ option on the router allows you to place one device outside the router's firewall and prevents most issues with the nettalk reaching our servers.

You can set your device on the DMZ via the following method.

1. First you will need the IP address of your nettalk device. This can be found by dialing *41# from your phone connected to your nettalk or by viewing your router's DHCP table - On most Linksys router's you can find the DHCP Table under: Status -> Local Network -> DHCP Client Table. From the table you can match the IP address with your nettalk's MAC address

2. Once the IP of the nettalk is obtained, you can find the DMZ option on most Linksys router's by going to: Applications & Gaming -> DMZ

3. Once on the DMZ page, click "Enable" and insert the IP of the nettalk. -Alternatively on some newer Linksys models, you can insert the MAC address of the nettalk without needing the IP

4. Once the IP or MAC has been inserted, "Save Settings"

5. Please un-power the nettalk device for 5-10 seconds and reapply power and check to see if the device has registered with our system.

If you do not  wish to place your device on the DMZ option, you may still open some of the ports needed  via the Port Forwarding Interface

My Netalk unit drops the connection at about 8 minutes after I make a call.  I would like to know whether the procedure described above might resolve this issue.  Any help will be appreciated.

@ HDNUT

Well, if you are using (or want to use ) nettalk directly from your router, there is no problem with configuring the router with placing the nettalk ip in DMZ.

If setting up a DMZ dedicated to for the NetTalk device doesn't improve your situation, you will likely need to send the unit in for replacement or get your money back from the retailer due to the device being incomptable with your system.  My suggestion is to get your money back and try something else.

(Unfortunately, I waited too long for the NetTalk people to help me and i forfeited my option to return the inoperational device for a refund. NetTalk finally sent me a firmware update which killed the device DEAD.   It required a number of emails and then threats and many weeks to finally get them to issue a replacement.  To date, i havent received one yet and it may not still work when i do. So i recommend for you not to wait if device isn't working after setting up the DMZ.)

In any case, when the router no longer has NetTalk connected to it, you can remove the DMZ settings from via the router page.

The steps for configuring the DMZ are provided in this thread.  (They were eventually provided to me by the NetTalk people  and I saved them on this thread for others.)

Good Luck !

PS: A friend of mine has the same computer configuration as i do but uses OOMA VOIP with great success but its pricy.

For isolation, try to connect it straight to the modem if you still have the same problem. Check the quality of service behind the modem (whichvoip.com); you should be getting 75%. If it’s working fine behind the modem then we can say the router is the issue. Just make sure to forward the specific ports to that device as mentioned above.

@Scarlet -

I hope it works with the modem.

But mine never could work directly connected to the modem.

Further the enclosed setup pamplet indicated only 2 configurations, ie 1 with the computer and 2) with the router.  There were none showing a direct connection to the modem and it was not offered as an alternative methodology by the techs as well.

Perhaps, their alternative model / device which is wireless could connect to the modem directly.

Personally, I think there is a lack of quality control because the device is made in china and should be returned for refund.  I couldn't even access the NetTalk configuration page using the enclosed log in and password data.

Re: Any steps for Setting up NetTalk on M20

If the nettalk duo can be connected to the router thru an ethernet cable, I think it will or should work if it's connected to the modem. That's I think a workaround or an isolation that you may need to do to verify which is causing the problem. If it's the modem, the router or the nettalk duo device itself. If the connection will also drop on the modem then it's possible nettalk problem itself and there might be a need to call them up to consult the concern. If it won't then I think it's the router. Probably you may need to change a setting on the router and make sure as well that the router's firmware is updated.
