Advantages/Disadvantages of MAC Cloning??

I had something interesting happen with my wireless router yesterday that causes me to ask this question...  For some unknown reason my Wireless Router (WRT54GX2) allowed only LOCAL ACCESS and wouldn't allow access to the internet.  After 4 hours online via cable modem with Linksys, they had me clone the MAC on my PC.  That seemed to work.  Are there any advantages or disadvantages to MAC Cloning?  I've read it isn't even necessary anymore.  If that's the case, why is this suddenly a solution?

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages of MAC Cloning??

well, some cable companies require the mac address on the NIC card of the PC to be registered to allow an internet access...when the router is connected, the modem won't recognise the router's mac address and that is the reason PC's mac address needs to be cloned on the router so that the modem allows you an internet access through the router...

Thank you for explaining that.  It was very helpful.
