Accepted Solution

After cloning mac address.

So I have comcast internet. I have their Motorola modem. For a while now its been having problems connecting, I'd lose my connection. I'd have to manually unplug my router and things would work again. I'd do this everyday. So finally I searched here for a solution.

I saw that comcast modem actually has issues connecting to the linksys router, the solution was to clone the mac address. Which I saw Here : http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/I-need-to-reconfigure-my-WRT54G2-to-work-with-Com...

So I did it. Seems like everything is working fine. I should probably say that theirs two computers in my home. 1. Which is the one I'm using right now. Its a desktop and its connected by Ethernet cord. From my computer to the router. 2. My Brother's laptop which is connected wirelessly to the router. I also have a Xbox360 and a PS3 that are connected with Ethernet cords to the router.

So here's my question(s) Everything is working fine. I'm just a bit confused about some things. Originally to access my routers settings I'd go here : 192.168.1.1.

After cloning my MAC address I was told to not use that one anymore and to go here : 192.168.2.1. Fine. That works. However... When I visit the latter of the two, and it ask for an authorized username & password. My original username and password before cloning the MAC address no longer works. The only thing that works is "admin" and then It lets me gain access to all of the settings. Is that normal?

When I try to access the : 192.168.1.1. It never loads. but the new one 192.168.2.1. does load. So I guess my question is.. How come I don't have to put in a password? Do I need to make a new one? If so.. How?

By the way I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Router Model number - wrt54g2 v1 (firmware is up to date.)

I hope this isnt too confusing. If anything looks weird just point it out, and I'll try to explain what I mean again.

Alright, do you know which IP is the router and which is the modem?  Sounds like the 192.168.1.1 is the modem now.  Please let us know.

Re: After cloning mac address.

How do I find out?

Also It seems I did all of this for nothing.. still having connection issues with my xbox360 cant obtain ip or DNS :smileysad:

If I did all of this for nothing, how do I just go back to the way things were before?

Re: After cloning mac address.

You don't have to clone your ip for comcast. To do what sabertooth said, unplug everything from your cable modem, wait for 30seconds then connect the power and wait for it to load. Then connect your computer's cable to the modem. Now try typing in 192.168.1.1 See if a page loads up. The modem's ip is usually 192.168.100.1 so try that too and tell us if anything loads up.

Re: After cloning mac address.

It works it lets me go to 192.168.1.1..... but... I did something. I disabled the cloning of the mac address. Then I changed my router's LAN IP Address BACK to 192.168.1.1 (after cloning it was 168.2.1 ) Then I release/renewed.... Im so confused. I think Ive meesed with too many options. How do I just fix things back to normal? Where I have an Authorized Username and Password @ 192.168.1.1 and theirs not cloned address. and My wireless still works for my brother (since Im connected by ethernet cord)

Re: After cloning mac address.

Unplug your modem from the power and router. Leave it unplugged for 30seconds. Now hold your router's reset button for 30seconds. Now connect the power to your modem and wait for it to boot up. Now plug your router's ethernet cable into it. To change the router settings go to 192.168.1.1 and the password will be admin and keep the username field blank. Don't clone the mac address.

Re: After cloning mac address.

What about my wireless SSID that my brother is using on his laptop? Will that be fine?

Re: After cloning mac address.

This resets EVERYTHING. If you want then you can just disable the mac address cloning, then go the basic setup tab and change the router address to 192.168.1.1. Make sure to powercyclecthe modem to get Internet access. Go to the administration tab to change the login password

Re: After cloning mac address.

Okay I did that and I set a new password Thanks. My wireless seems to be working. Though I have a question about my connection vs my brother's wireless connection.

Lets say My connection to the lan port via ethernet cord is called Bobby1234. The wireless connection I made for my brother is called 323JustAName. Is that fine that its two different names? since I'm using a ethernet connection, and he's using the wireless router? Its suppose to be two different names right?

Re: After cloning mac address.

Where is it telling you the name for your connection and how were you able to change it to that name?
