I am setting up a new E4200 modem, and have not been able to use the wired connection. The Windows 7 diagnositic on all three computers tells me "Local Area Connection, doesn't have a valid IP configuration."
Model: E4200v1
Serial: 01C10C1A156093
Firmware version: 1.0.03
Operating system: Windows 7
Network controller: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
I am using a new E4200 router, along with a new SE1500 5-port switch and a new SE2800 8-port switch.
I am using a wired network that consists of two desktop computers, a laptop computer, a network printer, three Direct TV recorders, two Roku streaming video players, a BluRay player, and an XBox gaming console.
Here is what I have done so far.
1- I can bypass the router to establish a direct wired connection to the cable modem. This works to access the internet. It establishes a new wired connection called Network 2.
2- I can access the internet using the wireless connection to the router. It shows a valid IPv4 address.
3- With all cables in place, all the lights are flashing on the router and on the computers.
4- I had changed cables and swapped cable ends.
5- Using the wireless connection, I can access the router home page (192.168.1.1). It shows valid IP addresses.
Previous cases:
Case ID:
120213-000614 (2/13, 04:55)(Cisco Connect vs. Network Magic)
120213-002370 (2/13, 08:57)(using serial number and FCC ID number, determined that I have E4200 router hardware version 1.0)
120213-003182 (2/13, 10:14)(lost chat connection)
120213-004456 (2/13, 12:21)(disable wireless adapter)
120213-006508 (2/13, 15:25)(provided ipconfig data, suggestion was to change and/or swap cables, lost chat connection)
120213-008390 (2/13, 18:21)(provided IP address for wirless connection, technician said all was okay)
120214-000414 (2/14, 04:25)(changed Speed & Duplex settings on Realtek network adapter to 10Mbps/Half Duplex; no change; suggested that I replace the router)
The problem is that my old Linksys BEFSR81 stopped working, with the same eror message for the LAN connection, "Local Area Connection, doesn't have a valid IP configuration."
How often does the WAN port go bad? On both a five-year old BEFSR81, and a brand new E4200?

Try to connect another computer and then check the IP address once again. If it gives a proper IP address then provide the static IP address on the other computer. Here is the link provided to give a manual ip address: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign

I have three computers connected; two desktops and one laptop. All display the same IP information. I returned the E4200 with the dead WAN port to the store where I purchased it. I bought a new E3200 to replace it, and it works as advertized.
I also had an SE1500 switch that did not work at all, and an SE2800 switch with a inoperative power supply, and returned at the same time. I'll not be buying Linksys again due to unreliable hardware and tech support. I was staying with Linksys to replace a BEFSR81 router because they own Network Magic, which is a great product. But I just found out that Cisco is no longer supporting Network Magic.
One last thing: Linksys tech suppoprt, both chat and telephone (at least what I could understand), could not answer my question about how to connect two switches to one router. There is also no help in the Linksys knowledge base.

Two switches to one router, easy. Just plug each switch into a LAN port in the back of the router, or plug one switch in the back LAN port and the next switch in another port of the first switch to daisy chain them.

How does a dead WAN port translate into clients not getting DHCP from the router?
