I have a HP Pavilion a320n running Windows XP. My DSL modem is a Westell. My DSL provider is Bellsouth.
I am trying to hook up a WRT54GS. I first ran the EasyLink Advisor disk but was not able to connect to the internet with my PC.
After trying all the "fixes" suggested I called the service advisor and was told to download the program EasyLink Connect and not to use the EasyLink Advisor. I ran that program and still can't get on the internet.
I then used the FAQ answer "How to Set up PPPoE DSL Connections with a Linksys Router" and have followed the directions 3 times. Still no luck. When I check the connection at 192.168.1.1 I initially get that the Login Status is "Disconnected" so I push the "Connect" button. After several repeats of "Connecting" I get a pop up saying "Can not get IP address". Yes, I repeated the power up steps several time. I have also changed out the cables.
When I remove the router, no problem. With the router, no internet.
actually they are correct all you have to do is bypass first the router and check if you have internet connection from the modem, next thing you need to do is to check the ip address that the modem is providing you by going to start-> run -> cmd -> once the black screen appears type ipconfig/all and look for default gateway if it shows 192.168.1.x it means that your modem have the same ip address as your router's so next thing you need to do is to unplug you computer from the modem and connect an ethernet cable to any of the 4 ports at the back of the router it would be advisable to reset the router, you may do this by pushing/ holding the reset button at the back of the router for 30 secs after 30 secs let go of the reset button and unplug it from the electrical outlet and the router should be set to factory defaul, next thing you need to do is to open you web browser and type the numbers 192.168.1.1 on the address bar where it actually says http://. it will then prompt for a username and password and you need to skip the username and type admin as password,on the routers setup page look where it says local ip address, the default ip address for linksys routers is actually 192.168.1.1 since the modem is in the same ip address range you need to change the ip address of the router to 192.168.2.1 and then click save, after saving it will actually say page cannot be displayed simply because the ip address of the router has been change and your computers ip address is in the 192.168.1.x range you need to release your ip address by clicking on the start button -> run -> cmd -> on the black screen type ipconfig/release then enter, ip address well then turn to 0.0.0.0 you need to renew your ip address so you need to type ipconfig/renew. you will notice that the ip address of your computer will then change to 192.168.2.x - if it does not make sure that your computers ip address is not set to static. you may actually check it by clicking on start control panel -> network connections -> right click on local area connection or (LAN) click on properties on your local area connection properties youll see internet protocol TCP/IP highlight it and click on properties make sure that obtain ip address is bulleted as well as obtain dns servers automatically, if it is set to obtain automatically what you need to do next is to connect the modem to the internet port at the back of the router turn off the power of the modem turn of the power of the router. then turn the power on your modem and then the router, you should be able to access the internet after you followed this procedures if youd still cannot connect check if your firewall is disable. hope this helps.. have a great one..
