The WRT54G2 does not support the "DHCP reservation" feature, that is, the router cannot assign a device the same IP address each time it connects, based on the device's MAC address.   However, the WRT54G2 does support the use of devices on your network that have fixed LAN IP addresses.
Linksys has some very specific rules about assigning a device a fixed LAN IP address.  You must follow these rules carefully:
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address. So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.

When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically thru, and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.

Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of thru or thru
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.

Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to and the "Default Gateway" to and "DNS server" to

It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
Note that it is OK to have some devices on your network set to fixed LAN IP addresses, while other devices take their address from the router's DHCP server.

Hope this helps.

Re: DHCP reservation on WRT54G2

The stock Linksys firmware does not allow for assigning static IP address via the router's DHCP server. If using the stock Linksys firmware the only way around it is do what toomanydonuts suggested in his/her post and assign the static IP (if possible) on the device itself rather than trying to use the router.

The other workaround to this issue with the stock Linksys Firmware is to install 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT on the WRT54G2. Note usually installing 3rd party firmware voids the router's warrantee. The DD-WRT firmware has the option to create static IP addresses through the router's DHCP server. However, the use of DD-WRT may cause problems with your WRT54G2 router. For some of us who tried DD-WRT on our WRT54G2 V1 routers the wireless speed would routinely dropping down to 1 Mps and stay there no matter what Wireless TX settings were used.
