Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds and release. Wait 10 seconds and power cycle the router. Now connect via wired computer to 192.168.1.1 with username blank password 'admin'. Reconfigure or upgrade the firmware now.

I tried again and still not working. I held the reset switch for 30 seconds and powered off then on. Then I connected the computer to the router and the router to the cable modem. I then typed 192.168.1.1 in the browser and got the message Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.1.
The power light is still flashing.
The icon on the bottom right of my screen said I am connected to the network, but local only.

Since your light is still flashing, your firmware is corrupt. Don't know how that happened unless all this happened during an upgrade. You need to unbrick the router. Follow these instructions BUT first make sure you have a valid copy of the firmware before you start.
