Re: Resolved: E4200 Guest Network Not Working

[ Edited ]

That's interesting...

I found that in the Guest Access setting, it uses "Guest Password" instead of "passphase"

Yes, we don't need passphase to connect to the guest network, but after you login you have to use a browser to enter guest password in order to have internet access...

Re: Resolved: E4200 Guest Network Not Working

I have e4200 setup in bridge mode.  Working behind actiontec router.

Tonight I tested guest access and encountered same issue as others, could connect but could not get to internet.  timeout.  talked to 2 different linksys support via chats, both told me if in bridge mode, guest access will NOT work.

So i tried to setup the e4200 in bridge mode but have a dynamic ip.  Well after that change, I could never get to the e4200 admin screen.  I could never find the e4200 device in the actiontec network.  I could still get in via wireless and that continue to work but could not get into admin screen.

After losing another 3 hours of my life to this tonight, I gave up, reset router, and am giving up on guest access for now.

If others have gotten this e4200 router to work in Bridge mode, could you post specifics on how you configured it??

Re: Resolved: E4200 Guest Network Not Working

Linksys support is WRONG.

I have it working behind an Actiontec in bridge mode with guest access.  I found that the guest network cannot access internet unless you connect the Internet (WAN) port (not a LAN port) of the e4200 to a LAN port on the Actiontec.

So here is what I did:

Go into Actiontec using a hardwired PC with the e4200 disconnected from it.  Go into IP Distribution in Advanced and delete any IP entries.  Turn off wireless.  Power off Actiontec.

Reset the e4200 to factory defaults by pressing reset button for 5-10 seconds.  Go into 192.168.1.1 GUI.  In Setup page, select Bridge Mode and set a static IP (192.168.1.2; 255.255.255.0; Gateway 192.168.1.1).  At this point, the Web GUI is accessible at 192.168.1.2, so you need to reconfigure the network adapter on the PC.  Configure wireless including guest access.  (NOTE:  You can also have it to get an IP address automatically from the Actiontec.  Then, you will be able to see it in the Actiontec, whereas a static IP will not show...at least on my Revision I Actiontec).

Connect Internet (WAN) port of e4200 into a LAN port of Actiontec.

Start Actiontec.  After internet light comes on, turn on E4200.  You should be good to go.  It worked for me.

Re: Resolved: E4200 Guest Network Not Working

Hi rchdcheme

It works!!!

I am typing this from a Guest connection on the e4200 that is in bridge mode.

You nailed it, if in bridge mode and you want e4200 to work, you must have the ethernet cable from LAN on the main router to WAN on the e4200 router.

To summarize for others

- setup e4200 in bridge mode and static ip.

- setup e4200 wireless, including turn on guest account.

- Connect Internet (WAN) port of e4200 into a LAN port of main router

when guest connects

- sometimes I was not prompted for password, I pointed in browser to 192.168.33.1

and to think linksys was telling me to configure in 2 subnets and then start double nat, whatever that is.

Thank you!!!

Re: Resolved: E4200 Guest Network Not Working

Interesting...

I just a bought an e4200 V2( Firmware 2.0.36 build 126507). My Guest network is not acting like a separate network. I'm getting the same network (10.251.161.0) on my normal wireless network and the Guest network. I don't see the 192.168.33.x network on the Guest network.  I could login to the Guest network with no problem; the issue is that I can ping my devices on my 192.168.1.x network while login to the Guest network. My network is setup as follows:  time warner box --> linksys router --> layer 2 switch --> E4200 router (used as an AP)

I contacted Linksys support but no one had the experience to help me.

Any ideas?

View the available wireless networks and make sure it's connected to your network name.

What is the IP address of the working laptop? Can you connect your husbands laptop straight to the router and check the net?

Re: E4200 Guest Network Not Working

OK, I am here to settle this matter. It is possible to use guest network in bridge mode AND separate all other computers except your gateway to the internet from guest clients (guest isolation).

here is how:

1. Change subnet on your internet gateway local LAN interface. I used 255.255.248.0 (for example if your LAN network is 192.0.10.0 , making this change will allow your gateway router to talk to computers on 192.0.12.0)

2. Set the E4200 in bridge mode. Also use a 255.255.248.0 subnet. You will also need to use a local LAN ip address that is outside your normal LAN network (local LAN network = 192.0.10.0 so make your E4200 ip = 192.0.12.50 (or whatever)).

3. On E4200 enable all wireless but password them and enable guest.

4. Connect the WAN port on E4200 to LAN port on gateway OR switch.

5. Connect to guest network and try to ping 192.0.10.0 computers. You should not be able to. Now try to access the internet. You should be able to.

Because all device other than your internet gateway will still have subnets of 255.255.255.0, wireless guest clients cannot talk to them because they are on different subnets. Likewise, since your internet gateway now has a subnet = 255.255.248.0 it can talk to hosts on networks = 192.0.8.0 - 192.0.15.0 (which includes the guest network range)

BTW, you can now have up to 2046 computers on your network.

Any questions???
