My new (30 days old) EA2700 has probably less than 40 feet of usable range without obstructions. Is this normal?
I've got the router sitting at the end of the hall, and I'm at the other end without anything between and I'm at 11.0 mbps/'Low' on my laptop.
What gives?

You may need to adjust your router's wireless settings. To read more about this and hopefully find the best way to improve the performance, please click the link below:

I've been through the FAQ or the 'Knowledge Base' whichever that link points to. Not much help.

For the security, I would suggest that you set it to WPA2 Personal. You can also change width for the 2.4GHz wireless settings to 20mhz only and change the channel to 9.

These suggestions help the range in what way? Channel 9 is used by half of my neighbors. I'm leaving it at 1.

To check for the best channel to use, download inSSIDer from Metageek (click on the link below to download). By the way putting 20 mhz only for the channel width is for better compatibility.

I don't have a problem with connecting. I have a problem with poor signal strength. Let's stay focused.

Graphic evidence of the signal strength issue to which I am referring. Both of my neighbors are presenting a stronger signal than my EA 2700, and I have line of sight to the thing! I'm Channel 1, neighbors are channels 6 and 11.
