Well, it doesn't really matter whether it's a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port. I guess it will still be USB 2.0. It will be still much slower than the maximum possible USB 2.0 speed.

No. You are confusing something. USB 3.0 is only a standard as is USB 2.0. It is a standard which allows for transfer of data up to a certain transfer rate. Important word is "allow". It can do. But it won't.

 

Current EA series routers have a storagelink throughput of less than 80 Mbit/s (10 MB/s usually only 7-8 MB/s). That's simple because it's a router and not a NAS and doesn't have the CPU power, memory etc. like a NAS.

 

I very much doubt that the EA6500 will be such a power horse, having a very powerful CPU, lots of memory, etc. to make it a high performance NAS which would exceed the maximum USB 2.0 speed of 480 Mbit/s. And I guess only if it exceeded 480 Mbit/s they would bother putting in a USB 3.0 port at this time.

 

Thus, as it will most likely be the same or maybe little faster than those 7-8 MB/s there is no reason to put in a USB 3.0 connector. And even if they did: it wouldn't matter in respect to throughput. You would have a USB 3.0 connected drive which does 7-8 MB/s.

 

Only because something has a USB 3.0 connected doesn't mean it can do full USB 3.0 speed.

 

Just like only because something has a 1 Gb/s ethernet port doesn't mean it can do full speed 1 Gb/s network transfers.

 

The spec only says what's the absolute maximum possible. But what is can do depends on the device using that interface and in general you'll find it will do much less than the maximum.
