Firmware upgrade WRT160N v3

Apologies if there's a thread on this, but I couldn't find one.

I'm having connection problems with a new laptop and Windows 8.

My question is this:-

Can I check which firmware version I have preloaded on the router?

It has previously run without problems on an XP machine, since its purchase

in May 2011. From what I can tell, the latest firmware is ver 3.0 .03 build 3 from July 2010.

Should it be the case that I already have the latest upgrade?

many thanks for any help.

Yes you can check it.  Logon to your router at 192.168.1.1 username blank, password 'admin', unless you changed it.  Now check your firmware level.  Yes, that is the latest firmware.

Re: Firmware upgrade WRT160N v3

Thanks for your quick response.

It's showing 3.0.02.

Would you recommend an upgrade from 3.0.02 to 3.0.03?

Is this likely to address any issues with  W8?

many thanks.

Check the firmware fix list on the web site.  I doubt it will do anything for windows 8, as all routers are OS independent.  However the newest firmware has a lot of fixes, yes I recommend it.  Make sure you use a wired connection and hard reset the router and reconfigure it back manually after the upgrade.

In downloading the upgrade, the .bin file is associated with VLC,(media player),.

which can't open it. What program should open the file?

Thanks

You don't need to open the file. You need to do the upgrade via the setup page.

The following link would give you detailed instructions on doing a firmware upgrade. It is recommended to do a reset after the upgrade. The link also provides instructions on how you can reconfigure the router after the reset. Hope this one helps.
