I lost my router user name and password and reset didn't free the router

I haven't used my Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router for about 1 1/2 years and needed it now at a new place.

I set a user name and password I've long forgotten for access to the web based security protocols for the modem and I've lost the disk for the control protocol program.

I tried pressing the reset button to clear the modem and it took the WPA protocol off the modem so I can use it without any security but that's not a good thing.

Help! How do I get it freed up so I can get to the security protocols and put security back on my modem?

Hold the reset button for 30seconds.

I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

I tried that and then tried "admin" with no password and the router rejected it

Hey, "admin" with no password is D-Link *smile*.  For a Linksys router, it's "admin" user with "admin" as password by default, usually.

No, username is blank, password is 'admin'.

To free your Router from your Previous Settings.

RESET the router the button is @ the Back of it.

Connect a computer to any of the Numbered ports on the router.

Access User Interface of it http://192.168.1.1

Username: ( BLANK )

Password: admin ( all in lower case )

:smileyhappy:

Re: I lost my router user name and password and reset didn't free the router

The instructions on the website were contradictory.

One said to enter login name as "admin" and leave the password blank. On a different model besides the WRT54G says to put "admin" as the password and that worked.

It would be nice if their FAQ section was easier to find answers and had consistent answers, wouldn't it?

Please help.  I followed these instructions to reset my password and it works when I have a physical connection to the routere but when I try to use the same laptop to go WiFi I am unable to connect to the internet.  Any suggestions?

Open the setup page of Linksys router .

GO to the wireless tab and configure the network settings .

Create wireless network and put password . Try WEP as wireless security and connect to the network on your wireless computer . See if you are able to access the Internet wirelessly on laptop .
