List of tested External Hard Drives for E4200

[ Edited ]

The official List of tested USB storage devices for the Linksys E4200 is so short, and the fine print "If your USB storage device is not listed on the table, it is not guaranteed to work with the router" is very discouraging and not really helpful.

Let's create the community-based list of tested External Hard Drives for the Linksys E4200? Please post here the brand / model of your external hard drive which works well with your E4200. State Firmware version as well, please.

// Why I am posting this? My Toshiba 640GB Canvio® USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Toshiba P/N e05a064cau2xr, M/N 593400-b), when connected to E4200 Firmware v1.0.03 (Build 14), stops the router's both wired and wireless connection after a couple of hours. Very frustruating.

Maxtor OneTouch 4, 500Gb  works fine although it seems it doesn't go to sleep after v1.0.03

Sounds like a plan. :smileyhappy:  I also wanted to know other external hard drives that would work with my E4200.  ( I just bought one today)

Speaking of which, where can I get the best deals on external hard drives?

Re: List of tested External Hard Drives for E4200

I'm using the Western Digital Elements Desktop (2TB, USB 2.0). No problem at all so far. The only concern is the HD light always on, like if the disc were being accessed even when nobody is using it.

Strange.  I received my E4200 yesterday.  Today I configured Storage and connected my Western Digital Elements Desktop (2TB, USB 2.0) external drive (model WDBAAU0020HBK-01) and mine doesn't work with it.  It shows "Detecting..." and never works.  A 1TB WD MyBook I have works fine.    What model number drive are you using?  I'm running the 1.0.03 firmware.

Re: List of tested External Hard Drives for E4200

Hi!

This is odd...

I'm using the WD Elements Desktop 2TB (WDBAAU0020HBK-01) as well. E4200 Firmware Version: 1.0.03. And for me is working fine.

I plugged the WD again on my computer and got the same light rock solid...so I think I will not worry about it anymore.

:smileytongue:

Have you always used the 1.0.03 firmware, or did you use a previous version and then upgrade?

My E4200 came with the previous firmware and I updated it before using my WD. Here's a screenshot:

What file system are you using?

I've tried my WD Passport Portable Hard Drive120 GB (FAT32) but it did not work.

I used an Seagate 2,5" 500GB HDD in an MSI box and worked fine. After upgrading the E4200 to 1.0.03 the disc didn't go never to sleep and keep spinning all the time. I switched to NAS (Qnap TS 119P+) and this is working excellent also bringing lot of programmable features and iTunes, Squeezebox ...... support.
