I saw this response when trying to fix the same problem with my laptop (hp Pavilion dv8000). At first I tried these steps while being directly wired to the router and the "ping" was successful. Then, I removed the wire and tried it wireless and got the "time out" message.
I have 2 other laptops connected wirelessly through the same router, so the router is not dead, but I believe that one of the settings on this laptop is set incorrectly.
Modem: Scientific Atlanta 2203c
Linksys firmware 1.5.00
I'm set to receive IP address automatically. Any help is appreciated.

My Valet router is brand new and I have followed the instructions yet I cannot get it to work. When I ping, the message I get is "Ping transmit failed. General Failure." Please help. My computer recognizes the ethernet cable when plugged directly to the tower, but does not recognize therouter. I run Windows 7. Thanks.

"My computer recognizes the ethernet cable when plugged directly to the tower"
-why do you connect your computer to the tower? which tower are you referring to?
turn off the firewall and security settings in your computer before setting up the router.
