Problem with wired connection to WRT54GS

I am not real computer savy.  I am running Vista on a laptop.  The EasyLink advisor software does not work for me, never finds an internet connection when I know I am online.  I was able to use the knowledge base to get my wireless going and add WEP security without the Easylink software.  Now I am trying to "hardwire" and additional computer, but have not been succesfull.  The computer is an older  gateway (ELP 500s) that has a brand new hardrive and Ubuntu 9.x operating system.  I would think I could just connet the ethernet cable from the computer to one of the Linksys ports, but that does not seem to work.

The computer seems to think it has a connection, but I can't get online, nor can a connect directly to the WRT54GS by typing 192.168.1.1 into the browser.

Thanks

Re: Problem with wired connection to WRT54GS

Ideally when your router is installed any computer connected to it's ethernet port should directly connect to Internet regardless of the O.S installed...

Make sure the computer is not set to any static ip address, make sure the ethernet port light is ON...

Make sure LAN connection is Enabled, try another ethernet port or another ethernet cable...
