WD My Book Live Duo access through E3200...

Folks,

I have been trying to resolve what I think is an issue with DNLP or broadcast data getting to computers connected to my E3200. I have been wiresharking my network, trying different configuration, and scouring the web looking for an answer. I am now resigned to asking for help.

My network is setup as shown below. The E3200 is on the same subnet and wired to the switch using the LAN port.DHCP is turned off. UPnP is enabled. DHCP is provided by the WRT54GL and turned off on the E3200.

WesternDigital has a program called "WD QuickView" and another called "WD Smartware" which together provide feedback about the drive status and real time backup capability (I prefer not to argue the +/- of these programs if folks don't mind <grin>). I have two computers on the wired LAN at the 16 port switch on which these programs work just fine. I get feedback about the drive status and backups occur. I also have two computers on the wireless LAN through the E3200 which DO NOT get feedback about drive status and appear not to detect the drive through the software. I CAN however access the drive by mapping it on Windows explorer for example.

With wireshark I do see chatter between the NAS and the E3200 (TCP traffic which I am not sure about...dpkeyserv stuff). I see broadcasts from the NAS to 239.255.255.250 often followed by talk between one of the wired computers and the NAS (which I am thinking is the comms for the WD...not sure though). I do not see chatter between wireless connected computers and the NAS (except for SMB or transferring files).

Does someone have some pointers for me? It seems that the E3200 is not forwarding broadcasts to the computers connected to it even though it is connects as a switch.

THANKS for any clues or pointers.

I should add that prior to installing the E3200 (really as a wireless access point) I was using the wireless on the WRT54GL and the wirelessly connected computers worked well with the NAS.

kk1i, I know that I personally won't be able to help you. It seems from your diagram and setup that you're already probably far ahead of many of the people on this forum in terms of what you already know about networking. Hopefully someone here can help out, but I wanted to throw it out there that you might want to try something like DSL Reports. They have forums that cover networking in a bit more depth than what you'll find here. If you don't get your answer here, you might find it there.

Re: WD My Book Live Duo access through E3200...

Hi there. I've tried cascading two Linksys routers before (LAN-to-LAN) and my issue then is that computers on the 2nd router can't find the network printer on the 1st router. Might be something similar here.

Not sure if you tried these settings on the E3200:

1. Under Setup > Advanced Routing - disable NAT

2. Under Security > Firewall - disable SPI Firewall Protection

3. Under Administration > Management - enable SIP ALG, CTF and UPnP

I know items 2 and some on item 3 should only apply to services/applications going through the WAN like online games/VoIP but just to open everything up on E3200. I'm no expert. Just sharing what I did based from experience.

Re: WD My Book Live Duo access through E3200...

Thanks much for the reply and the ideas!

You hit on exactly the stuff I too thought might help :smileyhappy:

I also have WMM support enabled (is the default too) App&Gaming > QoS

1. Under Setup > Advanced Routing - disable NAT

Already done

2. Under Security > Firewall - disable SPI Firewall Protection

Already done

3. Under Administration > Management - enable SIP ALG, CTF and UPnP

SIP not enabled, but that is a port forwarding for VoIP and as you say only affect LAN<-->WAN

CTF already enabled.

UPnp already enabled (this would be the important one I think)

I did just try enabling SIP ALG, but it did not help.

Bummer.

Re: WD My Book Live Duo access through E3200...

I stumbled on this topic: http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/E4200-hidden-advanced-wireless-tab-settings/m-p/3...

Maybe your E3200 has this hidden advanced wireless settings tab too. Not sure what could be changed to fix your problem though. Maybe you can change some settings to a specific number rather than auto.

Handy...thanks for that. No joy for fixing things, but kudos for the info!

Re: WD My Book Live Duo access through E3200...

Hi kk1l, I believe at this point you may have already found the solution for your issue, but I had the exact same problem with my WD book live device but now the issue is resolved. The reason I am writing here is that I have at my home a very similar configuration as you described on your post. To address your issue, and using your example, what you need to do is to assign a static IP to the MyBookLive on your WRT54GL. By doing this, you should be all set. The "WD QuickView" and "WD Smartware" will recognize your WD device from all equipment attached to your network, both WRT54GL and E3200. As a matter of fact, the solution is valid for any router. I do not believe you would need this, but as a side note, you may also need to disable multicast streams (probably also referred to as multicast passthrough). Tip obtained from: http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Book-Live/Macbook-Pro-can-t-find-my-My-Book-Live-2TB/m-p/224604#M2911 I hope it helps.
