WRT 160Nv3 slow when multiple users online

I have a WRT160NV3.  When more than 1 member of the family is using a device it gets really slow.  For example, we have 3 laptops and a PS3.  When the PS3 is being used for online play and someone gets online to watch videos, etc it is extremely slow.  Is there an update to the router or do I need to upgrade?

technically, this is how it's supposed to be. remember that the router is a device used to allow multiple computers to SHARE the Internet connection. when you are given an amount of bandwidth by your Internet provider, this will be divided by the number of network "clients" or computers behind the router who will share this bandwidth. Internet gaming and video streaming are just some activities that require a lot of Internet bandwidth and could therefore cause Internet connection to slow down within the network.

My internet speed gradually degrades from a high of 23mbs to less than 1 mbs. If I reset the power to the router the speed immediately goes back up. It takes 2-3 days to drop to 1 mbps. What's happening?

OK, sharing is one thing.  If I share 4 gallons with my three family members, we still have 4 gallons.  But when my one friend shares internet with me, our download speed gradually goes from 1.5 mb to less than 50k.  That's ridiculous.

Sounds like you could use a router that supports QOS...

The speed using the wired port is 2.5Mps, but 0.5Mps even worse for the wireless devices (laptop, ipad, ipod) . any help?

In the section Application & Games you can apply an QoS. Click on it and you can give priority to several computers via ip - or mac adress or lan port.

Read the manual.

I understand that bandwidth is halved when two users are connected.

I have noticed that even when the second user is disconnected and completely shut down. The download speed remains pegged at a lower speed (around half).

Is this  aproblem with my Router, my IPO my computer or 'normal' behaviour.

Walt,

I would make sure that your computer's network drivers are up to date.  I would make sure that the latest firmware for your router is up to date.  If bandwidth problems continue, I would  test your laptop on another network that you trust.  If the bandwidth is what you expect on that network then it is either your router or your ISP.  You can test your ISP by connecting your laptop directly to the cable/dsl model via a network cable to your computer's network port.  After connecting the two via the network cable, turn off the modem, turn off the computer.  Turn on the modem and wait to all the lights have settled down 3-5 minutes. Turn on your laptop and once it is booted try accessing a simple webpage like www.google.com.  If google comes up, you have access to the internet and can test for speed.

My guess is that your router is the problem.  It could be that it is going bad, that the firmware is corrupt, or the firmware has a bug.  If after your testing you determine that the one common factor to poor bandwidth is the router, contact tech support and have them walk you through the process of clearing the firmware and reinstalling a fresh copy.  My guess is this will fix everything as long as the router's electronics are still sound.

One last thing, upgrading firmware is a bit of hoodoo-voodoo.  It should be as simple as applying the latest version.  But depending on who you talk to, the vendors have implemented a process that seems to me to be similar to hopping on one foot, while you turn counterclockwise, and pat your belly.  So my advice is to talk to tech support.  What you find on the web with regards to firmware updates and bricking your router (rendering it useless) is enough to scare anyone.

As for the half-baked useless comment that routers are designed to slow down with more users, disregard that comment completely.  While technically correct that the more users on a router the less bandwidth you have per user, this is neither relevant nor helpful to those seeking guidance.  It demonstrates arrogance where none is needed.

Re: WRT 160Nv3 slow when multiple users online

Many thanks for your reply.

I isolated the problem to the router as suggested,

And after appropriate "belly-patting" upgraded the router firmware driver.

That seems to have done it.

I am now very consistently getting close to the bandwidth promised, and the connection is now consistently graded as Grade A. (Used to drop consistently to Grade B or lower).

Thanks.
