WRT54G Router running slow

Last friday the internet ran very slowly.  I left for the weekend and figured it was just my ISP.  However when I got back Sunday the problem still existed.  Taking 30 second to load a simple web site with no huge graphics (im on a Cable modem).  Monday I contacted my ISP technical support.  We ran a tracert on my line.  He told me the tracert stoped at the router and to unplug it and try tech support again.  The main line is on my room mates computer that he wont let me touch.  However, that night I updated the firmware on the router.  That seemed to fix the problem.  Untill today.  This morning the internet was running slow again.  I ran a tracert and noticed once again it stopped at the router.  I went to class and came back later today and noticed the internet was fine.  I really have no idea whats going on.  Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, what about attempting to observe the connection directly from the modem?

As for the tracert it will definitely end at the router because it has block anonymous internet request feature on it. You can try running the trace route again if you want to after you have disabled that particular router feature.

Re: WRT54G Router running slow

I have also noticed that the speed ranges from 11 MBPS to 54.  Should it be a constant 54?  I singal strength stays at good or very good.

Re: WRT54G Router running slow

Since your wireless speed problems are intermittant, this suggests that you may be getting intermittant radio wave interference.  This can be caused by 2.4 GHz wireless phones (yours or your neighbor's), your neighbor's wireless system, etc.

For more information on how to correct this problem, see my previous post at:

Re: WRT54G Router running slow

The problems also occured on my room mates computer, he is running a cat 5 cable direct to the router.  Ive since bought a new router and everything is working better than ever.  Did this old router just die on me or is it possibly something I did?
