WRT54GC doesn't accept default password/hard reset doesn't solve this...

I'm trying to set up a wep key on a wrt54gc using the default ip and password (admin), but it denies me access.

I've never set the password so it should be default.  I've tried hard resetting twice...no luck.  I also ran a linksys router set up wizard application (from this website); that program confirmed that "the default password has been changed" - which I did not do.

Any suggestions before I RMA this?

Thanks!

Hard Reset a.k.a Pressing the Reset Button for for 30 seconds and then while still holding the reset button unplug the power cord of the router for 10 seconds and then plug it back in while still holding the reset button for another 10 seconds.

You will know the router is being reset if the power light blinks a bit during the process. :smileyhappy:

Thanks for the fast reply.

Is the unplugging portion of your suggestion SOP?  Or is that a trick someone figured out?

I hard reset for almost a minute; twice.  But the power was off.

The reason I ask is this router is not easy to access, so I want to make sure I get as much info as possible before attemping it again...

much appreciated

Re: WRT54GC doesn't accept default password/hard reset doesn't solve this...

Can’t access the WEB UI or the logon screen window won’t show up.

Troubleshooting Tree

  1. Check for valid IP address (e.g. 192.168.100).
  2. Include http:// before the number (e.g. http://192.168.1.1).
  3. Disable any firewall & proxy that are enabled. Clear cache.
  4. Disable any 3rd party filtering software like pop-up blocker, ad ware, spy ware & anti-spy ware (Microsoft beta anti-spy ware).
  5. PING the router, it should have 4 replies.
  6. Power cycle the router. If still won’t work try this option below:
  7. Change the advance settings of Internet Options. HOW TO:

·        Go to Internet Options properties>>select Security tab>>click Custom Level

·        Under Settings click or scroll down at the very bottom

·        Under User Authentication>>select the radio button that says “login with current username and password” then hit OK to save the settings.

  1. Try other PC of those solutions above failed.
  2. Hard reset the router if two computers both unable to access the router.
  3. If hard reset won’t fix it, re-flashed or upgrade the firmware.

Try leaving the user name blank.
