Today I upgraded my Internet speed with my ISP to 60Mbit/s and I get following download results at speedtest.net:
• modem+cable - 54-56Mb/s
• router+cable - 54-56Mb/s
• router+wireless - 16-20Mb/s
Is there a way to speed up my wireless connection with this router? On the sticker it says 54Mbps, so I would guess it should be possible.
Router: WRT54GL v1.1
Firmware: Tomato 1.28.1816
OS: Windows 7 Professional
Wireless adapter: Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter
Ask if any other data is needed.

Thanks a ton! At the moment I cannot make the test, but I surely will when my flatmate is back. However it would be more to satisfy my curiosity, as the router is in the other room and I cannot connect it with cabel, so I will have to buy a new one anyway. I had WRT54GL for years and it never dissapointed me, so I'm kinda sad I would have to get rid of it, but better get a new one now, when I can sell this one for not a bad sum.

To take advantage of +60Mbps internet connection wirelessly you will certainly have to upgrade to a 802.11n wireless router...

in trying to upgrade my service from the local cable company, I have to switch my WRT54GL to PPTP and cant find where to enter the server IP address.
Can anyone tell me where I find the field to enter this?
If not, do I need to upgrade firmware?
Current level is V4.30.11
Thanks in anticipation

When you scroll down on the setup page, you will see on the Network Setup the Network Address Server Settings for (DHCP). I checked the website and for the 4.30.12 firmware version, it says that:
- Resolves issue with saving DHCP settings when using PPTP as Internet connection type.
- Resolves security issues found by Tomaz Bratusa (Team Intell) related to session riding. Adds HTTP session timeout.
- Updated PPTP Internet connection functionality
- Resolves issue with setting management port when https is selected.
If you need to verify this info, just go to homesupport.cisco.com website and type-in the model number of the router and click on the downloads once you have the page for the router.

Thank you for the response, I'll make the changes.
I tried to get the firmware updates, but can't see any for my H/W version (1.1) despite being told that 4.30.15 was there. I was told it was probably the browser, so I tried again with firefox and chrome and got the same results, a work colleagues pc also couldn't see the firmware either.
If my firmware is OK to go then its no issue, but I am curious as to why I can't see the new firmware.

Try to change the country from United States to any APAC region country and you should have the option for ver 1.1.
