cannot access router by 192.168.1.1 Internet Explorer crashes

I want to access my router by typing 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer.
When I do this, I never get to the screen asking for my password,
Internet Explorer stops . It first gives a message about searching for an online solution and then stops, crashes.
In this way, I am unable to access my router setup page.

I have a WRT54GS and am running Vista.

Thanks for your help,

Re: cannot access router by 192.168.1.1 Internet Explorer crashes

Hi
Try the following steps to access the router setup page :-

Open an Internet Explorer browser page >>> Tools >>> Internet Options
- General :
. Click on Use Blank button
. Click on Delete Cookies and Ok of the confirmation box
. Click on Delete Files and check the option Delete All Offline
Contents and click Ok
- Connections :
. Select Never Dial a Connection
. Click on the LAN Settings button
. Uncheck all the boxes here and click Ok
- Advanced :
. Click on the restore defaults button below and then click on
Apply and then Ok.

Re: cannot access router by 192.168.1.1 Internet Explorer crashes

I have done all you said , Internet Explorer started up with a "run once" scheme where I had to enter some settings. Tried again with 192.168.1.1 but Internet Explorer crashes again.
Ran Ccleaner and Cleanup programs too,
I am running a Virus scan now (but I never had virus problems before), waiting for the result

The router is working, I just cannot access its setup page , which is very annoying.
Should I try another browser too ?

Thanks,

Re: cannot access router by 192.168.1.1 Internet Explorer crashes

Good thinking. I tried on my laptop instead of the desktop,
on the laptop I get immediate access to my router setup page using 192.168.1.1.
FYI : the laptop is running good old XP, the desktop is on Vista.

So I can access the router setup page now from the laptop,
but obviously I want to do this also from my desktop.
I tried something else on the desktop : to ping 192.168.1.1, that works.

At least we know now there is really nothing wrong with the router,
from the test with the other PC.
It's basically Internet Explorer that's allergic to this 192.168.1.1. I would still like to solve it though, any more suggestions ?

Re: cannot access router by 192.168.1.1 Internet Explorer crashes

IT WORKS !
I did a Windows Update, found out Vista Service Pack 1 had disappeared - I don't know why because I had installed it before, or is this already a new one ?
Anyway after the lengthy wait for the installation of the Service Pack,
I tried again to type 192.168.1.1 in my Internet Explorer and it works,
I have access to my router setup page.
Man I'm glad this is solved.
So I'll keep the IE 7 and not move back to the 6.

Thanks for your help and support , going to bed now it's past midnight here but I'll sleep better knowing this is solved. **bleep** Microsoft again, I was this close to resetting my Linksys router ... for nothing.

Thanks again and have a good night rest too,
bye
