I understand that the media and ftp server functionality uses/needs some sort of name to broadcast
But what purpose does having the router broadcast its device name on the network?
I would imagine it might be for the printer service
In any case I am not using any of those services,
and I am unble to hide the routers from the network
I would prefer them to not show up in a browse list
The funny thing is, I some how managed to hide them,
not sure how, but after a reboot it reverted back to broadcasting the device name on the network
If I am not using any of the routers services for media, ftp, printing
how can I stop it from showing up on the network?

Can you please tell us what is the device name that it displays and also if it is identical to what you see in the setup page of the router under 'network setup' router address, section?
Just FYI, we cannot leave the 'device name' field blank or hide it somehow since its a mandatory field.

yes the name being seen on the network is the one on the setup page for device name
1. I would like to be able to not have it broadcast
2. if 1. is not possible, then I wish we could **bleep** a $ to end of the name
so the windows world would not see it on the network directly

<quote>There is No other way to hide the domain name of the router.<quote>
I noticed you mentioned domain name
I am wondering about "Device Name"

As time passes, we get see more examples of how Cisco / Linksys is repeatedly forcing things upon us
There are many great examples
one of which I have pointed out in this thread with the device name appearing on the local network
another is how they force the log light upon its uses
yet another if with a previous router I owned the wrt610n
for a long time they forced three useless devices to appear on the local network
of which thankfully a hidden config page was finally found to turn them off
EGHN Qos Policy Holder Device
EGHN Qos Manager Device
In the name of choice and "security"
Please for sanity sake
Give us the ability to stop the routers from appearing in the master browse list and broadcasting on the local lan!

I still think it is utterly stupid that the router has to broadcast itself on the network as a device
which is even further compounded that the alphenumerics we can choose for a name are also limited
I would be fine with adding a "$" to the end to hide the device from the windows world browse list
so basically you cant turn it off and you cant hide it, there is always the power switch right...

IMHO, I think it will be okay that the router's device name will be broadcasted to the local network since the router still has a login password.
