how to connect 2 laptops to one wireless router

I have two Dell Inspiron laptops (with windows Vista) and a Linksys wrt54g wireless router. I can connect with either laptop to the internet, but not with both at the same time. I have to disconnect the internet from one before i can connect with the other.

I've searched online for an answer, but I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem. I've already updated my router with Firmware.

Also, if i connect one laptop with a cable to the router, then it automatically knocks the other off the net and allows me to connect, not sure if that helps any.

Any help is appreciated and thanks.

What is the version No. of the router. The Version No is located at the bottom of the router.

Try upgrading the firmware.

The list of latest firmwares for WRT54G is :

                     Firmware           Link to download
ver. 1 to 4      4.21.1              tinyurl.com/2wa88v

ver. 5 & 6       1.02.5             tinyurl.com/2wa88v

ver. 7.0           7.00.4             tinyurl.com/34sokc

ver. 7.2             7.2                tinyurl.com/34sokc

ver. 8.0          8.00.5              tinyurl.com/2wa88v

ver. 8.1         8.01.08             tinyurl.com/2wa88v

ver. 8.2          8.2.05              tinyurl.com/2wa88v

Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds and try Internet.

Than open the setup page of the router and do the wireless security if you want.

Reply what happens ?

Re: how to connect 2 laptops to one wireless router

I had already updated with firmware and it didn't change anything.

How can I pull up the set up page? Since I have Vista, the installation CD wasn't compatible. I've found directions online, but its for XP and the network connection options aren't the same as Vista, so it didn't help.

To change the DHCP server configuration, can I only do that on the set up page?

Thanks.

Yes.  DHCP configuration should be on the setup page.  Enter 192.168.1.1 in a browser, and enter the username and password.  It should open to the setup page.

Re: how to connect 2 laptops to one wireless router

I've got the set up page up. This is what it reads:

Automatic config DHCP
MTU is auto
DHCP is enabled
Max # of users is 50
Lease time is 0

I'm guessing since the max users is 50, then that's not the problem?

Re: how to connect 2 laptops to one wireless router

Can you open a command prompt window on the comuters and type "ipconfig/all"
on both computers and paste the results.  Maybe they're both configured to the same ip?
