internet ip address is internal modem address

hi!

first of all i apologize if i've overlooked a simular post and ask a previously discussed question again, but i couldn't find a clear answer.

i tried to setup dyndns on my wrt320n (fw: v1.0.03 build 010 Jul 24, 2009). after i created an acoount at dyndns and configured it on the router, i recognized that the internet ip address is the internal ip of my modem. so my dyndns address gets resolved to the internal ip of my modem. how can the router get the real external ip so dyndns is working correctly?

You have chained two routers: first your modem/router combo device and then the WRT320N. If you want to use DynDNS in this setup you have to set it up on your modem/router. That's the device which has the public IP address, not your WRT320N.

Otherwise, I would recommend to put the modem/router into "bridge" mode. In bridge mode it will work like a standard modem would to. You can then configure your WRT320N to connect directly to the internet. This will solve your DynDNS problem and should be also a little bit faster then two chained routers and more maybe even more stable.

that's what i found in other posts as well.

my modem has indeed two options

 - work as modem (each computer builds it's own connection to the internet)

 - work as router (each computer uses the same connection)

it was always the first option (modem) active. and the modem has no configuration for dyndns.

any other ideas? is there a way to proof that the setting is realy active?

What is the exact model of your modem?

Post the connection status (page Status) of the WRT while the internet port is connected to the modem.

In addition, connect a computer directly to your modem. Verify you have internet. Open a command prompt and enter "ipconfig /all". Copy the full output into your response.

That should give a better idea about how your modem is operating.

As I wrote before: the FritzBox works like a router. Why don't you use the FritzBox as your main router?

If you switch the FritzBox to modem mode you have to configure PPPoE in the internet connection settings of the WRT. Only then the WRT will connect directly to the internet. I guess if you don't do this the FritzBox will continue to work as router.

Hi,

As you are getting the private ip address 192.168.1.x from the modem/router..I would suggest you to convert your modem into the bridge mode and then,configure the linksys router with PPPoE settings..It should resolve the issue.

thank you for the hint. the modem was configured right the whole time. the problem was, as you said, that the internet connection type of the wrt was set to automatic configuration - dhcp. after changing this to pppoe everything works fine.

As a follow-up to your answers:  The Internet modem you have is a modem/router and might already have a username / passowrd entered.  This style of configuration is quite popular with ISPs and does not require a PPPoE setup by "most" customers.  This does limit the options you can do wtih the modem especialliy port-forwarding.  Use the PPPoE setup as much as you can.
