topic E1200 Functionality in Wireless Routers

Hello!

I have a question about the function of an E1200 relative to a WRT54G. We currently have the 54G plugged into our LAN, the Ethernet cable plugged into one of the Ethernet ports, not the Internet port, on the back. It is giving wireless clients IP addresses according to our main LAN DHCP, as if they were hard-wired which is correct. Bad thing is, I have no idea what IP address is/was assigned to the 54G itself as it was not logged when done, way before my time. Thanks to that I cannot log into it and take a look at its settings and attempt to mimic what is going on in there on something like an E1200.

Therin lies my next questions. What could be occuring on the 54G that is enabling it to dish out like a WAP and does the E1200 support WAP function? If not, which models do that can be added to the 54G?

Any help if greatly appreciated!

Can you tell us which OS is the PC running? Also have you tried the default html address in a browser? 192.168.1.1? If this works then in theroy you can then access setup features?

The OS is WinXP Pro SP3 and I have attempted the 192.168.1.1 management page when directly connected to the router but not go. That is what leads me to believe the router address was manually modified at some point. The WRT54G that is.

If you are trying to open up the Router setup page for, for that make one computer wired with the Router and then check the IP address on that computer ... You can do the following steps to check the IP address:

# Click on the start menu button and then on run...

# Type "cmd" (without quotes) and hit enter...

# Once the box opens type "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and hit enter...

There you will be able to see the default gateway through which you can open the Router setupge... If that does not resond then the other alternative is to reset the Router and do the configuration again on the Router...

Secondly E1200 does work as an access point but does not function as a repeater....

Thanks scrooge for the help! I attempted the command line ipconfig to find the router IP but to no avail. I will just leave it as is. The info on the E1200 being able to work as an AP, is promising however it appears to only allow class c addresses. I would need to assign it a static to match a class b. :-(

Hey Skagnatti,

I'm not sure if it's even possible to setup class b addresses on your E1200.

On the "ipconfig /all" command, why was that to no avail? It will show a default gateway like mine does in the "ipconfig /all" sample output below, all you need is a DOS comnand prompt window to issue the command:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
 Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : hsd1.ca.comcast.net

. Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection

 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . :

 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

 Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

 Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . :

 IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.116(Preferred)

 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, September 21, 2011 8:55:24 AM

 Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 22, 2011 8:55:24 AM

 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

 DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . :

 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . :
 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . :

 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

and the Default Gateway is the address of the router.

I know I was wondering the same thing. Well lemme go through the steps I tried:

Plugged the net cable into one of the LAN ports on the router then into laptop, waited for the NIC to do its thing and then ran ipconfig /all but it came up with the APIPA address and no Default Gateway. The NIC in the laptop was configured for auto resolution of addressing at the time. I then tried setting the NIC to what the LAN settings the router would have been set to i.e. gateway, subnet, ip on that subnet... etc. Still no go. Got APIPA. I also ran an IP scanner on the scope of static IPs it would be in and then manually tried to log into the live hosts in that scope one at a time (is not very many ) but no go.

Is it possible I'm doing something wrong? Quite possible, but I ran through the typical stuff that would let me see what was the deal on the WRT54G. Although if you do not know the IP address of the router operating as an AP, I think one is out of luck and has to just do a reset. Just further reason that the peep whom configured the router should have documented as well. Always document static devices like that.

I dunno. I hung it up on that thing until the time comes that I will have to reset it from malfunctioning of failure.

I too think the only option left here is to reset the router to factory defaults and then reconfigure. And yes, without forgetting to document the IP address of the router
