I would suggest having one of the first steps in setting up your network is choosing wired vs wireless backhaul thus allowing the nodes to find each other and auto setup right off the bat.
Step 1 - wired or wireless backhaul
Step 2 if choosing wired - how many nodes
Step 3 are nodes connected to the network now?
Step 4 If yes then discover nodes, if no then tell customer to connect them all to the network.
At this point in time it's also whether to use existing DHCP server and pass through dhcp or to only use separate DHCP for wireless clients or walk customer through the fact that the root node must be inline with the rest of the network if using a wired network setup or multiple DHCP servers on the same network.
