I just purchased an E4200 as an upgrade from 3000 (that often required a power cycle...) My speeds seem to be consistently slower on the 4200 than the 3000 from 30~40 feet away. When hard wired I get a consistent 20-25 M download speed, when testing via wireless on the 4200 I'm lucky to get 10~15M. I haven't messed with channel shaping, or frequency, I figured it best to ask this right out of the box before tweaking with configuration. It can easily be returned but I would really like to get this configured for maximum throughput to get away from the 3000 heating and connection dropping issues.

Did you try updating the firmware? A new firmware addressing wireless issues has been released. After upgrading, make sure to reset the router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds, powercycle it and reconfigure from scratch.

A small suggestion prior to upgrading firmware on any router. Go to the <Administration/Management> web page of the router and select the <Backup Configurations> button, usually at the bottom left of the page. Save your current config as a file on your PC. I have a separate folder for each of my wireless routers (an E3000 and an older WRT54G V8.0 as backup), each with a subfolder for Config-Backups.
After upgrading the firmware, I go to the same admin web page on the router and use the <Restore Configurations> button to restore the previously save config file. I then review all config web pages to see if any new functions have been added and confirm all prior settings are set. This saves time in resetting config settings after a firmware upgrade.
When originally configuring a router, I enter all config settings (changes and/or defaults) in an Excel (or MS/Works) spreadsheet. Any changes that are made, at any time, are recorded in that spreadsheet. I keep one spreadsheet per router that I own. This comes in handy when configuring a new router as I can clone the spreadsheet and get it's config setup faster based on prior preferences and suggestions.

try first checking if this issue happens on the wireless or wired (or both connections). it is also possible that there's a problem with the Internet output coming from your modem. try a wired connection to the router as well, then observe.

In the E3000's Firmware Release Notes for firmware version V1.0.04 (build 06) Cisco mentioned there was a "Fixed issue of decreased WAN speeds." entry in V1.0.03 (build 02). I suspect this was an issue across all existing E-series Wireless routers at the time.
I strongly suggest my previously recommendations after downloading and upgrading to the latest firmware version your E-series router complete with a full POR (Power-Off-On-Reset) of the router.

Keeping in mind I am discussing E4200 issues, not the E3000 it replaces...
Realizing that 2.4GHz has better penetration than 5GHz I relocated the router to a less desirable location (as in it can now be seen in a living area) in our house to confirm suspicions of structural interference - yes, that is/was part of it. Additionally I have toggled SSID from one single, to unique (as it should be by default in my opinion) just to see what would happen, as one would suspect, my wireless card gloms onto the stronger 2.4 signal and holds a reasonably solid 144 Mbps. When using unique SSID's and locating my laptop within the same room / line of sight, I can usually get 300 Mbps, not the theoretical 450 is it? Yes, maybe I'm asking too much but it sure would be nice to know what one can truly expect from this new hardware, and, it would be nice if Cisco would provide a "rule of thumb" for determining what to realistically expect with X number of walls as interference, etc.
I'm still not totally sold on the deal but as one who remembers being all excited about my first 1200 bit/s modem, one must be patient as technology marches on. That said, I want it to be perfect now! ![]()
Fine tuning suggestions are gratefully accepted....

i have a e4200 the condition is the same before and after

I have similar issue, running firmware v1.0.01, after a few days, 2.4ghz speed dropped significantly from 300Mbps to 58Mbps, but the speed was only running less than a Mb/s. The computer was only 2 feet away and in line of sight of the router. Speed degradation only affects 2.4Ghz, wired and 5Ghz do not have this issue yet. I had WNDR3700 and did not have speed degradation for a least a month, but E4200 already begin showing signs of connection speed issue after 2 days of usage.

UPDATE: Not only 2.4ghz wireless, but also affects wired WAN, 30Mbps dropped to roughly 1Mbps 2 hours after a restart.
