E4200V2 Parental Controls Setting Specific Times Issue

[ Edited ]

I recently purchased the E4200V2 Wireless Router for my home network. I am trying to setup the Parental Controls using the Specific Times settings. The issue is that when I go to select the beginning time for the rule, the drop down box only allows times from noon to midnight. I have never seen an access control schedule not have the ability to be run at any time during a 24 hour period. The end time drop down box is not correct either. This is just sloppy coding and I hope the Cisco fixes this and adds the ability for their customers to choose whatever time frame we need to setup controls for access on our network instead of limiting the time frames available to us. While this midnight may work for younger kids it does not work for teenagers who may need access later in the evening to work on homework.

If Cisco is moderating these entries, please have the engineering group update the next release of firmware to include this option or include full Internet Control Policies for the E4200V2 as the E4200V1 had this feature.

I think what you're looking for can be found with the Internet Access Policy enabled (also in the Access Restrictions tab). The Parental Controls just seems to be a simplified version of Internet Access Policy.

Re: E4200V2 Parental Controls Setting Specific Times Issue

The internet access policy page was missing from the E4200V2 during a recent review. It was a radio button adjacent to parental contols to toggle between IAP and PC.  See link below. Another limitation of the parental controls(V1)  is you can only add 5 devices total. This is true on the V1, not sure if they've changed this for V2.  A  total of five devices? C'mon!

Unfortunately in the new E4200V2 there is no Internet Access Policy section in the Access Restrictions tab. The V1 version of the E4200 had it but not the V2 version.

Re: E4200V2 Parental Controls Setting Specific Times Issue

I also wish in v2 they had the more advanced restriction settings like in the v1.  Not being able to apply a new policy with different times other than what is allowed in drop-list of the Parental Controls blows.

This isn't a cheap router so why skimp on the firmware?  My older D-Link was a lot cheaper but had more administration features than this thing.  Still...performance on it has been good.  I used my old router to extend the network in the house.

Re: E4200V2 Parental Controls Setting Specific Times Issue

Sorry to be joining this a little late but I just got hit with this today!  Hello... they removed Internet Access Policy from V2 when V1 had it??!!! Smiley Frustrated

This totally sucks.  I was banking on using IAP to reference devices by IP or MAC address because the discovered host names that show up in Parental Controls are near useless (I have 5 devices that all says "Network Device"... nice one).

Also, the relatively ridiculous limitations of Parental Controls compared to Internet Access Policy are worth staying away from the former.

But I wonder if they had problems with IAP either in that it didn't work reliably, or that it was too taxing on the CPU.

Can someone from Cisco please reply about whether there is any hope of seeing IAP as an option for E4200v2 units?

Re: E4200V2 Parental Controls Setting Specific Times Issue

I had the WRT310N which had the Home Network Defender.  This is the best for parental controls.  You can configure each computer to have seperate date and time, no limit on the number of computers.  You can even configure the filtering policy for each device as well.

I just purchased this E4200v2,  and it does not have this feature built in.  The Parental Controls that are in are very restrictive and does not help at all with filtering except to filter specific websites.

Home Network Defender let you filter by categories of sites and you can filter specific sites and also based on key words as well.  I am very disappointed.

I don't care if it takes extra processing, if I want to enable it, I should be able too.
